Director of Finance

JOB SUMMARY

 

The Director of Finance has strategic and operational accountability for the financial management of the Society. The position oversees a complex financial environment including recording and reporting of financial data, preparation and monitoring of budgets, management of funds and overseeing the accounting department. The director is part of directors’ leadership team and offers advice and support to department directors and program supervisors. The role provides staff direction to the Finance Committee of the Board.

You will provide guidance, influence the agency’s policy and strategic direction, and drive the agency’s financial plan. You will work with various committees and liaise with funders and stakeholders to meet or beat the agency’s targets. You will plan, organize, problem solve and strategize to manage the agency’s financial environment. You will be involved in a number of exciting social justice initiatives around homelessness, Syrian refugees and our new Abbotsford Foundry youth initiative and our Canada to India program to name a few.  

 

VACATION

You will start with 3 weeks of vacation for your first year, and receive 4 weeks in your second year.

Responsibilities

 

Financial Activities

  • Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of reports that outline the agency’s financial position based on operations; the maintenance of cash accounts, budgets and regulatory agency and governmental reports; the management of the day-to-day processing and activities of the Accounting Department, and the direction of the agency’s accounting systems.
  • Supervises the coordination of annual budgets. Provides support to managers and supervisors with budget procedures, budget preparation and financial forecast for internal/external use. Approves all budgets before submission to funding sources.
  • Provides financial analysis for monthly and annual operating results against budget and funding requirements.
  • Participates in the negotiation of property, liability and health insurance policies and similar agency/association wide agreements. May be involved in the negotiation of major service contracts, and funding agreements.
  • Prepares for and coordinates annual audit with agency’s auditors.
  • Researches investment options for the society’s cash assets.
  • Responsible for the safekeeping and stewardship of the agency’s capital assets.

 

Human Resources Activities

  • Manages and supervises a team of employees that provide financial, accounting and payroll services for the organization including labour relations issues specific to hiring, annual performance appraisal, discipline, grievance resolution, arbitration, discharge.

Policy and Strategy Activities

  • Develops and reviews finance policies, outcomes and strategies with the Director of Operations and Executive Director to ensure financial activities comply with regulatory bodies, funders and agency priorities.
  • Develops and implements financial administration and internal control policies, standards, procedures, practices and systems consistent with Board and Executive Director approved directives, applicable legislation and GAAP.
  • Employs strategic thinking in planning and developing financial forecasts, new initiatives, ongoing programs, and providing advice.
  • Assess financial risk with respect to ongoing and new initiatives and makes recommendations to executive leadership.

Organizational Activities

  • Strengthen relationships with funders, auditors and other external parties through the provision of required financial information
  • Participate on relevant Board/Staff Committees (e.g. Finance, Directors Team).
  • Other responsibilities as required.

Requirements and qualifications

EDUCATION and CERTIFICATION

  • Professional Accounting Designation, CPA
  • Must maintain a satisfactory criminal records check

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in senior level finance position
  • Minimum 3 years of management experience
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL SET

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft excel and accounting software.
  • Collaborative approach to problem solving and the ability to work effectively with individuals on all levels (internally and externally).
  • Demonstrated organizational skills – planning and scheduling while meeting the needs of multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
