 A career opportunity has opened up with The Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver (EFry). We are a fast growing human rights and social services not-for-profit agency serving women and girls affected by the justice system.


Primary Purpose: As the Volunteer Coordinator, you will be responsible for the recruitment, performance management, training and development of volunteers to support EFry’s Storybook Reading Program. The Storybook program brings parents and children together through the power of reading. EFry supplies new, age-appropriate books and records inmate parents reading them aloud. A CD player and the recordings are then sent to their children, giving them an opportunity to share a story together. The Storybook program is available at Allouette Correctional Centre or Women, Fraser Valley Institution and Surrey Pretrial Centre.


Key Duties/ Accountabilities: Support the development of strong volunteer teams to meet the needs of inmates who are separated from their children. This will be done through managing the recruiting and staffing of site volunteers, developing an ongoing plan for volunteer training, scheduling, and developing materials intended to support volunteers. Promote the Reading Program broadly, including creating relationships with additional sites/institutions and with organizations looking to place practicum students with EFry. Administration of the JustKids Programs including ordering and managing supplies for reading and crafts programs, preparing and submitting monthly and quarterly reports by summarizing stats sheets and assisting with JustKids programs and the annual Christmas party as needed. Additionally, communicate with the Director of Human and Social Development to help her improve the experience of inmates seeking support, and the productivity, accountability and job performance of volunteers looking to make a difference.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Both local and provincial criminal record checks including vulnerable sector
  • A valid Driver’s License with no restriction and a clean Driver’s Abstract
  • A reliable car with business insurance, mileage will be paid.


Education and Experience:

  • A Volunteer Management Certificate or similar designation.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication and networking skills. 
  • Be a proactive, energetic team player with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong leadership skills and recruitment experience and knowledge with the ability to facilitate training, resolve conflict, and coach others.
  • Strong project and time management skills to ensure ongoing operations and capacity building workshops for both volunteers and clients. Strong training and development knowledge and experience.
  • Willing to provide criminal record checks including vulnerable sector and comply with EFry policies and commitment to the mission of EFry.
