Where do we work?

While WJS serves individuals in many communities across Canada, this opportunity is in the Lost Lake area of Nanaimo, BC.  Nanaimo is located along the eastern shores of Vancouver Island, just over 100km north of Victoria.  It is an area surrounded on three sides by spectacular waterfront views.  The area is rich with eco-adventures and personality.  As the second largest city on Vancouver Island region, Nanaimo offers urban amenities such as fine dining, boutique shopping, community festivals, along with the natural beauty of the area.


The Program:

Lost Lake’s Program accommodates and supports a single youth with autism in a comfortable facility with twenty four hour staffing (2-to-1 staff ratio during the daytime). We offer a safe environment in a serene area just outside of Nanaimo.


The Position and Scheduling:

The Casual Residence Worker including Overnight Awake scheduling (CRW) is part of a dynamic care-giver team and is responsible for assisting our person served (PS) to live successfully in residential settings in an accredited agency. Ensures physical, emotional, social, educational and medical needs are met. The CRW assist PS to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills.  Provides behavioural support and supervision in the program and community, implements and monitors individual program plans through observation and accurate reporting, and participates in operating and maintain the program.  This position requires union membership with BCGEU.


This position will work a variety of shifts that include weekdays, weekends and evening shifts that could include (but not limited to) scheduling of 0600-1400, 0700-1500, 1400-2200, 1500-2300 and 2300-0700.


As an ideal candidate you possess:

  • Grade 12 education plus certificate or equivalent experience in related human/social service field
  • Other combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Preference given to those with one year experience operating a licensed home, trauma informed practice, ABA
  • Current WCB Occupational First Aid, Level 1 (or ability to obtain within the probation period)
  • Ability to use common computer applications required (training provided)
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with clean driver’s abstract and reliable transportation.
