Term:
Part-time consultant for a maximum 90 hours per month

Job Scope:
The Educational Outreach Coordinator is responsible for managing the logistics and evaluation surrounding the Genome BC “Geneskool” program, with an initial focus on Lower Mainland and Travelling Suitcase components. The successful applicant will be highly organized with excellent interpersonal skills, capable of staging workshops and multiple stakeholder schedules to the satisfaction of all parties. This position is perfect for a science enthusiast who wants to enrich the education of students across BC by bringing early-career scientist volunteers out of the lab and into the community. Opportunities exist for candidates that display an interest in, and aptitude for, the development of hands-on educational activities.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordinate teachers, volunteers and supplies for Geneskool workshops in schools throughout British Columbia.
  • Organize the delivery and return of Geneskool Travelling Suitcases, ensuring that contents are complete and in good condition.
  • Evaluate the Lower Mainland and Travelling Suitcase programs on an ongoing basis and make improvements where necessary.
  • Report to the Education Manager on a regular basis on the status of Lower Mainland workshops and Travelling Suitcase programs, maintaining information systems as required.
  • Assist the Education Manager in promotion of the Geneskool program to teachers and prospective volunteers.
  • Create and maintain relationships with teachers and volunteers.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of the Geneskool program, for example through the development of new resources.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Organized individual with experience in administrative roles
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated customer service focus
  • Enthusiastic about genetics/genomic sciences and hands-on education
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) with a capacity and willingness to learn new digital tools as needed
  • Experience in volunteer recruitment, training and management considered an asset
  • Knowledge of the BC formal education system considered an asset
  • Knowledge of pedagogies associated with informal education considered an asset
  • Familiarity with social media tools (Facebook, Twitter) considered an asset
