Pacific Autism Family Network
Region: Vancouver & Lower Mainland Type: Full time
Location: Richmond, B.C. (just off Russ Baker Way) Salary: TBD - based on experience

The Pacific Autism Family Network Centre in Richmond is looking for a full time Cafe Barista / Supervisor for our ‘Paper Planes Cafe’ coffee shop, which is a newly developed multi-venture social enterprise facility.

The Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN) is a Centre of Excellence and network of supports for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families across the province.  The PAFN’s core purpose is to be a Knowledge Centre: Bringing together state of the art resources for research, information, learning, assessment, treatment and support; and building capacity to address the lifespan needs of individuals with ASD and related disorders.

More information can be found at www.pacificautismfamily.com.

The Cafe Barista will be responsible for ensuring efficient and effective café operations, keeping track of finances, scheduling, and ensuring sufficient stock of items and supplies.

Hours worked would be primarily Monday to Friday in the daytime.  Note that given the small size of the facility, much of the workday would be spent operating the shop independently.

In addition to operating as a small, fully operational coffee and food service outlet, the Cafe is also focused on helping to develop paid, goal-oriented employment opportunities for individuals with Autism and related disorders.  The Cafe Barista would help provide this training to these individuals in the Café, with some supervision and guidance from our adult program directors.

This is a great opportunity for a responsible person who is a self-starter with good coffee shop experience, who is looking for:

  • 40 hours a week;
  • Daytime Monday to Friday hours with some flexibility;
  • An opportunity to gain experience working with people with Autism and related disorders;
  • An opportunity to join a world class facility unlike any other, and be part of an enthusiastic team to help make a difference for people with Autism and their families.

  • Hands-on day-to-day operations;
  • Manage and maximize the monthly sales activities;
  • Contribute positively to a meaningful, productive, supportive environment;
  • Create a comfortable, happy atmosphere for customers;
  • Maintain professional attire / appearance at all times while at work;
  • Ensure the highest quality products and customer service;
  • Process incoming payments and manage and maintain inventory;
  • Conduct training, track performance progress, etc. when business is sufficient to warrant;
  • Order food / merchandise / supplies from suppliers as needed;
  • Provide some assistance with booking inquiries for meeting and event spaces located within the Centre, and assist with any required space setup.

  • Barista knowledge / experience required;
  • Two of more years of related work experience in a retail environment;
  • Supervisory level experience is an asset;
  • Ability to work with diverse populations;
  • Experience working with individuals with ASD and related disorders is an asset, but not required;
  • Ability to understand basic financial reports;
  • Experience with Square POS system is a definite asset;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills;
  • Able to collect data for purposes of program evaluation;
  • Food Safe Level 1 certificate;
  • Clear criminal record check;
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be fully fluent in the English language, written and spoken.
