The External Advocacy Advisor (EAA) is the primary strategic resource for political advocacy in the University of Alberta Students’ Union.  Reporting to the Director of Research and Advocacy (DRA), the EAA is responsible for providing policy analysis and strategic advice in the following areas: municipal, provincial, and federal government affairs, as well as University of Alberta and Students’ Union affairs that relate to government policies. The EAA advises the DRA and the Executive Committee, particularly the President and Vice President (External), on how to accomplish the policy and advocacy-related objectives of the Students’ Union. This includes, but is not limited to, participating in lobbying efforts and any public campaigns of the Students’ Union. This may also include day-to-day supervision and mentorship of an undergraduate campaign coordinator.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement periodic advocacy plans for the President and the Vice Presidents.
  2. Provide staff support for executives at out-of-town conferences and meetings: provide staff support for one or more executives at a conference or meetings.
  3. Oversee the development and maintenance of an information management system whereby political issues and frequent topics are tracked and described for the purposes of creating permanent institutional memory.
  4. Collect and catalogue a wide variety of data relevant to post-secondary education for strategic advice and recommendations to the Executive Committee.
  5. Work with the Marketing & Communications department to develop communications strategies relating to the political goals of the Students’ Union.
  6. Ensure that the UASU develops and maintains relationships with key media outlets and key media personnel through media strategy development.
  7. Act as the coordinator of all government relations activity not performed by the organization’s lobby groups and represent the UASU to government when required by the Executive Committee. The EAA is expected to cultivate liaisons with individuals, departments, and organizations external to the Students’ Union for purposes of relationship building, intelligence gathering, lobbying, and mobilization.
  8. Monitor legislation from all levels of government that are relevant to students.
  9. Develop and manage all political campaigns as directed by the Executive Committee.
  10. Maintain educational materials and provide educational programming on political and governance matters for the Executive Committee, staff, elected students and anyone else deemed appropriate by the Executive Committee.
  11. Prepare short-term projects, such fact sheets, pamphlets, or other campaign materials.
  12. Work with the Executive to assist Students’ Council in the creation and maintenance of the Students’ Union’s political policies.
  13. Maintain contact with the staff of external organizations the SU partners with. The EAA may also be directed by the DRA to assist with the development of research, policy, and strategy for external organizations the Students’ Union works with.
  14. Coordinate the department’s efforts to maintain up-to-date awareness of all issues within the post-secondary system; relevant emerging political issues and trends at the municipal, provincial, federal, and international levels; as well as relevant trends in the media, NGO and corporate sectors relating to post-secondary education.
  15. Perform any other job-related duties as required by the DRA.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Degree from a recognized university or a relevant combination of education and experience.  
  2. Demonstrated commitment to post-secondary education issues.
  3. Extensive knowledge of the post-secondary education system in Alberta, including the political climate surrounding potential changes to the current system.
  4. Experience in the planning and management of political campaigns.   
  5. Experience in developing and completing a major research project and in formulating policy.
  6. Able to communicate clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.  
  7. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to provide appropriate advice to the Executive Committee to achieve both short-term and long-term goals.  
  8. Able to both take political direction and lead a team.
