The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation (HCTF) is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and self-directed individual to communicate about our organization and the fish & wildlife conservation projects we fund in BC. Reporting to the Manager of Program Development and working with staff and Board members of the Foundation, the Communications Officer will ensure the Foundations’ communications and outreach activities are carried out effectively and efficiently and aligned with HCTF’s mission and values.

Responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with the Foundation staff and Board members to develop and implement the communications strategy and annual work plan;
  • Developing and refining HCTF’s core messaging, ensuring consistency across business areas;
  • Coordinating media relations, including development of press releases, backgrounders, and fact sheets, as well as collecting and analyzing media coverage;
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with media, communications specialists, proponents, funding recipients, shareholders, stakeholders, other non-profit organizations, and government representatives essential to the Foundation’s mandate;
  • Identifying and evaluating communications opportunities;
  • Maintaining, updating and assisting with the design of the HCTF website;
  • Creating and managing content for the Foundation’s social media accounts;
  • Working with Foundation grant recipients to increase awareness of their projects and the contribution of the Foundation;
  • Planning and delivering HCTF speaking engagements and events;
  • Developing and tracking metrics to measure success of activities in achieving communications outcomes
  • Reporting on metrics and communications activities to the HCTF Board of Directors;
  • Developing and managing contracts to assist with the delivery of communication initiatives, including monitoring and evaluating results to certify for payment.
  • Providing input to the management team during the preparation of strategic and operational plans to enhance habitat conservation within British Columbia;
  • Providing input respecting the management and refinement of processes for the communications business lines to support successful implementation of the Foundation’s mandate; and
  • Maintaining familiarity with the habitat conservation efforts of the Foundation.
  • Supporting a culture that reflects Foundation values of exceptional performance, continuous improvement, and ongoing learning and development;
  • Contributing to open and effective communication links between staff and the management team; and
  • Supporting a healthy and safe working environment.

 

Qualifications:

  • A diploma in a field related to the responsibilities of this position such as Communications and Marketing or, for persons without the foregoing, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;

 

This position requires experience as well as demonstrated success in:

  • Communications and outreach;
  • Preparing reports and presentations;
  • Writing/editing/layout of digital and printed communications products tailored for specific audiences; and
  • Familiarity with website design, maintenance and upkeep of content.

 

The successful candidate must have the ability to:

  • Work efficiently and build effective relationships with others;
  • Develop and implement operational and work plans in a timely and effective manner;
  • Make modifications to business practices to improve the effectiveness of processes; and
  • Make a contribution to habitat conservation within BC.

 

Preferred Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fish, wildlife and habitat conservation in BC;
  • Experience working with the media;
  • Experience with Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), WordPress, MailChimp, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter);
  • Excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills;
  • Experience planning events;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with limited direction and adapt to changing priorities and emerging issues;
  • Strong analytical skills. Ability to conduct market research, analyze information, and make practical recommendations on complex problems;
  • Experience working with a non-profit organization;
  • A valid BC driver’s licence;
  • Occasional flexibility in working hours and some travel may be required
