Toronto Wildlife Centre is a registered charity supported primarily by donations. The busiest wildlife centre in the country, TWC rescues, admits and cares for approximately 5,000 sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals each year and delivers a wide range of public education programs.The centre is operated by a small group of highly skilled paid staff with several hundred dedicated volunteers working in all areas, from wildlife care to administration.


Position Summary

In this diverse role, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day facilities’ needs including managing staff and volunteers, routine maintenance, repairs, and new cage construction projects. This position requires a handyperson who can not only manage others, but is willing and able to work hands-on as needed. Working closely with our team in a fast-paced environment, the Facilities Manager must possess strong communication and leadership skills and be able to react quickly to changing situations.

Key Responsibilities


Current Facilities

* Manages and works closely with support staff and volunteers, volunteer carpenters and other specialty volunteers

* Ensures facilities remain clean, tidy, and organized

* Ensures that work is carried out in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety

* Joint Health & Safety committee member

* Responsible for all facility repairs and maintenance for all TWC locations

* Oversight of all grounds maintenance for all TWC locations including snow shovelling and grass cutting

* Responsible for facility related supplies and services at each location including cleaning supplies, garbage and recycling services, etc.

* Builds and repairs cages

* Participates in evaluating and creating policies and procedures as they relate to facilities

* Works cooperatively and communicates with all departments on facilities related tasks

* Other responsibilities as needed


New Centre

* Coordinates the evaluation, consolidation, and/or purge of current cages, equipment, supplies, and furnishings at Downsview and 2 Rouge Park locations

* Once above completed, creates a plan to move cages, equipment, supplies, and furnishings to new site

* Oversees and participates in the construction of new animal enclosures

* Learns new building systems and ensures their regular maintenance

* Responsible for mechanics and systems as related to the new building as listed above

* All other duties as listed under current facilities



* 3+ years of Maintenance/Facilities Management or related experience

* Previous experience managing a team of staff and volunteers

* Must be prepared to work outdoors and in all weather conditions

* Must be able to lift a minimum forty (40) pounds and perform strenuous activities such as lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, etc.

* Basic computer skills

* Genuine concern for wildlife and environmental issues

* Good written and verbal communication skills

* Sensitive to the special needs of wild animals in captivity

* Must be detail oriented, organized, and able to multitask

* Basic handyperson skills, good working knowledge of tools, carpentry etc.



* Post-secondary education in a related field

* Health and Safety training, First aid
