The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN), as part of the PEGASIS New Horizons for Seniors Program, is dedicated to creating communities where seniors feel more valued, are respected, and can safely participate. Using a community engagement approach, our Seniors Community English Program focuses on reducing the social isolation that seniors from within newcomer populations in the Edmonton area experience by providing opportunities to improve their English language skills both in the classroom and in the community.

Context of work:

English as an Alternative Language (EAL) classes are offered to immigrant seniors (defined as individuals born outside of Canada who are 55 years or older) in various locations throughout the city.

Seniors Community Connectors support isolated seniors from amongst immigrant and refugee communities with the objective of increasing social connections by facilitating access to these EAL classes, as well as providing information and assistance with integration into new cultural contexts.

In conjunction with the Seniors Community English Program Coordinator and EAL teachers, the Seniors Community Connectors are responsible for identifying seniors in ethno-cultural communities who experience isolation resulting from social and linguistic barriers. Seniors Community Connectors are responsible for building strong relationships, offering culturally appropriate support, finding community resources and fostering service delivery both within internal programs and external partner agencies to increase immigrant and refugee seniors’ participation in their communities.

Key Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

Participant Recruitment & Classroom/Activity Planning

  • Use creative and deliberate outreach approaches to identify isolated senior EAL learners and connect them to the English classes
  • Attend EAL classes, organize and support class trips into the community that facilitate language acquisition and/or increased community connection for participants
  • Arrange transportation to and from classes and assist seniors, if required. Assist clients with daily transportation needs, when identified

Relationship Development and Support

  • Engage in relationship building through home and community visits
  • Provide immigrant and refugee seniors with access to formal and informal supports to improve the quality of their lives
  • Provide supported referrals, when appropriate, to EMCN programs, PEGASIS partners and other relevant services
  • Establish positive and productive relationships with PEGASIS partners and other relevant (mainstream, immigrant, senior) community services, programs and resources

Program Operations

  • Participate in staff meetings, case-management sessions, and committees/working groups
  • Participate in community meetings, promote EMCN and PEGASIS programs and services through presentations and information dissemination
  • Prepare weekly reports and maintain written documentation on work with clients (i.e. referrals, plans, activities)

  • Post-secondary education with experience working with seniors, newcomers, or other isolated individuals
  • Knowledge and familiarity with immigrant and refugee communities in Edmonton
  • Experience working with local immigrant communities preferred
  • Experience in developing and maintaining relationships in community settings
  • Experience working with MS Office computer applications and other programs

  • Self-directed, capacity to interact in unfamiliar settings, and ability to address problems analytically
  • Organizational skills and activity planning (as appropriate for program purposes)
  • Excellent communication skills in English and at least one other language, with fluency in a variety of settings (i.e. with team, with agency partners, with seniors)
  • Time management skills, ability to set priorities to reach program outcomes in settings with limited time and resources
  • Intercultural competence, with capacity for self-awareness, self-reflection and an ability to interpret cultural nuances
  • Ability to work in ambiguous contexts
