EMBERS Eastside Works
Region: Vancouver & Lower Mainland Type: Full time
Location: Vancouver Salary: 42,000

If you have a passion for projects that push conventions to create social change and thrive by making meaningful connections - keep on reading.

Established in 2001, EMBERS’ mission is to create economic and employment opportunities for people living on low incomes that face barriers to employment. Located in the heart of the DTES, EMBERS Eastside Works is a hub that connects individuals to ways to earn income to improve their overall well-being. We are a small team committed to meeting people where they are at and providing flexible supports. The approach of Eastside Works is fundamentally different from existing employment services because our goal is not necessarily to move people off of income assistance and into full-time work but to support individuals’ goals for improving their livelihoods.

The role:

We have a new opportunity as a Community Connector. This role is kind of like the glue between community members and all the different opportunities, programs and resources Eastside Works is connected to. But, you’re glue that grows: you actively work to reach more community members and to more opportunities that enhance individuals’ wellbeing, including contributing to innovative employment models that have never been tested before.

As Community Connector, you will focus on:

  • Creating sincere relationships with community members as well as other organizations in ways which respect the integrity of the DTES community.
  • Using creative approaches to meaningfully build relationships with DTES community members and to learn about their goals for improving wellbeing.
  • Challenging norms, traditions and constraints of formal and informal systems that present barriers to people.
  • Facilitating relevant, accessible and dynamic capacity-building activities that inspire and build confidence in participants.

You should apply if you are:

  • Bold, outgoing, and have a genuine curiousity about others.
  • Game to ideate, iterate and can stand to be a bit uncomfortable. You have wacky ideas that you aren’t afraid to put to the test - and have them fail.
  • Easily tired of repetitive processes but you recognize the importance of administration to support research and reporting outcomes.
  • Interested in being part of a team that seeks to make a meaningful contribution to systems change around poverty reduction and societal conceptions of work.

It would be nice if you have:

  • Sound knowledge of how to navigate computers including database entry, document formatting, and internet browsing.
  • Some experience in the DTES or a related community. This means you have experienced diversity, and know something about the complex issues community members face related to gentrification, oppressive systems, inequity, mental health, and poverty.

There’s a wide range of experiences relevant to this role, so we don’t want to dictate what’s required. Instead, include a cover letter that tells us about the experience you have that makes you perfect for this.
