ROLE PURPOSE

 

Assists clients to transition and live successfully in residential settings such as group homes and the wider community. Ensures that clients’ physical, emotional, social, educational, and medical needs are met. Assists client to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills. Assists the supervisor in providing orientation, training, work direction and guidance to residence workers. 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

The Senior Residence Worker:

 

  • Assists the supervisor in providing orientation, training, work direction and guidance to residence workers by performing duties such as clarifying program policies, reviewing work, and scheduling residence workers. Provides input to residence workers’ performance evaluations.
  • May oversee the operation of the residence in the absence of the supervisor or as directed.
  • Participates in the assessment, goal setting and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for individuals living in a residence. Documents, implements and provides input into the evaluation of the program.
  • In cooperation with the Residence Manager, is available to all resource staff, in case of emergencies. This may include carrying the pager or cell phone 24 hours a day.
  • Provides life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance and implements personal service plans.
  • Assists clients with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts, transfers, hygiene, grooming and toileting.
  • Participates in various client-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
  • Recognizes, analyzes and deals with potential emergency situations such as clients’ aggressive behaviour to ensure no harm comes to the client and/or the public. Reports problems to the supervisor.
  • Administers medication to clients in accordance with established policy.
  • Assists with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties. Provides input to counsellor, professional with regard to the development of appropriate program plans to achieve residents’ objectives. Contributes to the evaluation of residents’ progress and prepares reports.
  • Provides emotional support and feedback to residents and their families.
  • Transports and assists residents to appointments, shopping or leisure activities.
  • Performs residence maintenance and housekeeping duties such as laundry, sweeping, mopping floors, mowing lawns, inventory, shopping, cleaning equipment and food services.
  • Maintains reports such as statistics, logbooks, daily activities on residents.
  • Identifies social economic, recreational and educational services in the community that will meet clients’ needs. Maintains liaison with other agencies, professionals, government officials and the community.
  • Interact with other professionals, family members and organizations to ensure services, admissions and treatments are in the client’s interest and supportive of the long-term goals.
  • On the client’s behalf, be a resource to other professionals, including but not limited to the courts, probation services and community and institutional psychiatric services.
  • Complete monthly progress reports.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a University Degree in a relevant branch of the Behavioural Sciences.
  • Possess experience in the appropriate field and demonstrate a clear ability to respond will in crisis situations.
  • Must have an understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities.
  • Have direct experience with individuals who have a history of conflict with the law, mental health and/or mental disabilities, interaction with social agencies and life controlled by psychiatric/personality disorders.
  • Have extensive knowledge of community services in Greater Vancouver as they relate to persons with psychiatric involvement.
  • Experience working with clients with Autism and preferred experience providing ABA therapeutic support
  • Have extensive knowledge of community services in Greater Vancouver as they relate to persons with psychiatric involvement.
  • Have demonstrated experience in an applicable residential setting.
  • Be able to satisfy the requirements of the residence contractor in regard to previous criminality as deemed necessary.
  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge of the technical details important to the functioning of group residences.
  • Be fully aware of the contractor concerns, laws and policies related to the specific residence program.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
  • Have knowledge of theory, principles and practices in the fields related to the particular residence.
  • Possess a class 5 driver’s licence if necessary.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to deal with crisis situations.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Have a strong desire to work as part of the facility and the JHSLM staff team.
  • Have and maintain a current First Aid Certificate – Adult Residential Services or equivalent.
