Program Overview

The Toronto Youth Job Corps (TYJC) program helps at-risk youth gain sustainable employment through skill development and intensive life skills training. About 90 at-risk youth participate in pre-employment training, assessment and work experience, leading to a 16-24 week work placement, with the goal of securing full time employment with the same or a different employer. Participants are involved in a community work team experience assessment that includes providing painting services for non-profit organizations, receiving structured feedback, developing an action plan, carrying out career exploration, and participating in employability skills workshops.

The person in this role will support our youth clients with their job search through accessing employment programs, such as Ontario Works, and recruiting employers, agencies, and local businesses to obtain various work experiences / job placements for clients.

 

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • Research, identify, and solicit commitments from sources of employment and negotiate work experience opportunities that meet both client and employer needs
  • Carry out job development using JVS Toronto’s consultative sales model including prospecting (cold calling), networking, employer needs analysis, features/benefits, and other job development and sales techniques
  • Build productive ongoing relationships with potential employers for agency programs/clients, contacting employers using random and targeted lead generation approaches for current client job placement needs, and advocating on behalf of the client
  • Follow up with employers and clients to support ongoing retention in employment or work assignment; monitor placements; and identify strategies to maintain client success
  • Assess work environment to ensure employers meet legislative requirements
  • Develop and prepare employment and retention plans, training agreements, and associated file documentation; prepare and maintain files, statistics, reports and all documentation required to meet JVS Toronto and Ministry service standards
  • Coordinate relevant guest speaker presentations and group excursions as it pertains to job readiness
  • Support clients’ job search efforts through critiquing their resumes and covering letters
  • Facilitate weekly pre-employment workshops using job readiness curriculum
  • Meet client job placement and retention targets through effectively carrying out the above mentioned tasks and distributing program promotional materials to actively seek out new clients
  • As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, support the overall program planning and delivery as needed
  • Uphold Salesforce data management and data integrity

 

Flexible hours / evenings / weekends may be required for this position.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • College diploma in Marketing, Social Services, Child & Youth Worker, or Human Resources; or evaluated as the Canadian equivalency
  • 1-2 years of job development experience, particularly working with youth
  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of at-risk youths’ needs
  • Ability to develop relationships with young people
  • Ability to deal effectively with employers and other stakeholders
  • Sensitivity and tact to deal effectively with youth from different cultural/racial backgrounds and/or with special needs
  • Possess current working knowledge of employment-related issues and learning approaches to make use of suitable marketing techniques to attract employers
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; experience in writing reports
  • Computer literate; the ability to learn systems used by the agency (ie. SalesForce)
  • A clear Police Vulnerable Sector check is required for this position

 

Our ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience working in sales or recruitment
  • A valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a vehicle as travel is required for this position
  • Employment Ontario knowledge and exposure
  • Knowledge of employment legislation (Occupational Health & Safety Act, ESA, Human Rights)
  • Knowledge of a second language
