Child & Youth Support Worker- STAR Club

Permanent Part-Time Position – 18hrs/week

STAR Club is seeking an engaging and creative individual who wishes to join our team and help us support children and youth living with developmental disabilities. We offer a variety of fun and educational groups that nurture the children and youth through recreation, community outings, skill development and social opportunities. STAR Club is an evolving program that provides an array of opportunities for its participants to gain independence and enriched experiences within social settings. Groups are comprised of children and youth ages 6-18.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

  1. Provide a safe, fun and positive environment for children and youth to grow, play and interact with others;
  2. Support children/teens attending STAR Club in various capacities, including personal care, in an environment which promotes dignity and self-respect;
  3. Work in partnership with families and caregivers to help ensure individual preferences and supports are addressed;
  4. Transport group participants in program vehicles and personal vehicle to a variety of venues;
  5. Encourage physical activity as a means of increasing self-confidence;
  6. Foster independence, employment ready skills and community inclusion through all activities;
  7. Assist with intake and assessment procedures for group participants and their families/caregivers;
  8. Develop and deliver suitable programming for the participants of STAR Club;
  9. Maintain accurate record keeping, documentation and office files, and
  10. Communicate and collaborate with MCFD Special Needs Team as STAR Club’s funder.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  1. Must have minimum education of Diploma in Child and Youth Care or related field (i.e., Social Services/Social Work); or currently enrolled in post-secondary for either of the aforementioned.
  2. A minimum of a 1 year experience working with children and teens with developmental disabilities;
  3. Must be able to work on Thursdays from 2:00pm-7:30pm, Fridays from 3:30pm–8:30pm, as well as Saturdays from 8:30am to 4:30pm from September to June. For the month of July only, must also be available to change work hours to Monday through Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm. Work schedule flexible for the month of August yearly;
  4. Must exhibit personal maturity and sound judgment and have strong interpersonal skills;
  5. Must hold Current Standard First Aid with CPR/AED;
  6. Must hold current class 5 license, clean drivers abstract and personal vehicle & insurance fit for transporting clients;
  7. Must have and maintain a satisfactory criminal records check;
  8. Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook & Power Point, with excellent written and spoken communication skills;
  9. Ability to work in a team setting and independently, and
  10. Ability to implement a strength-based approach in all facets of the program.

 

POSITION PARTICULARS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

We offer a competitive wage and benefits. This is a permanent 18 hours/week position, where opportunities to work additional casual hours within the Community Living Services team may exist. Professional/casual work environment.
