Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) has a F/T employment opportunity for a Program Manager in the Overly Creative Minds (OCM) program which provides arts and culture programming 5 days a week for Indigenous youth ages 12-24 years old.  

 

The Program Manager is responsible for developing and delivering programming focussed on fostering creative expression among participants through weekly and one-time projects related to a variety of cultural, traditional and contemporary art forms.  The overall objective of the program is to provide Indigenous youth with safe space to explore their artistic and cultural creativity.

 

The Urban Native Youth Association believes that youth are the experts in their own lives.  All employees use a harm-reduction philosophy and a trauma informed lens when performing their work. The Program Manager will be required to engage and mentor youth at every skill level.

 

The hours for this position will be 40 hours a week in the afternoons and evenings, Monday to Thursday 12 pm-8 pm, Friday 9 am-5 pm. Scheduling may be adjusted based on the needs of youth and programming opportunities.  This position reports directly to the Director of Youth Programs & Administration.      

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate UNYA staff and volunteers for the OCM program. Establish effective employee coaching and support to ensure the success of the program.  Ensure the timely completion of personnel file paperwork including criminal record checks, staff orientation and training, and performance evaluations for program staff and volunteers.  Compile and submit all personnel-related information to the Director of Youth Programs in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Form & maintain positive working relationships with Indigenous youth.  Actively recruit participants to ensure ongoing and meaningful youth engagement in all aspects of programming. Ensure the ongoing utilization of appropriate community referral networks.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and supervise both one time and weekly scheduled arts and culture programming that will occur 5 days a week afterschool, evenings and on professional development days. Create monthly calendars and promote the activities throughout the community.
  • Create a safe space for all youth and staff by responding to behaviours and situations through a trauma informed lens, modelling respectful behaviour, and through thoughtful and fun interactions with staff and youth. Adhere to UNYA’s Philosophy of Care, and all program-specific and organization-wide policies and procedures.
  • Develop, promote, and maintain diverse community partnerships to maximize programming opportunities. 
  • On an ongoing basis, recruit, train and supervise volunteers & facilitators to contribute to the development and delivery of workshops, weekly programming, and/ or resources. 
  • Maintain appropriate statistical records, logs, etc. in order to meet both UNYA and its funder’s requirements.  Develop/implement evaluative tools to support program needs and inform ongoing program assessment and evaluation.  Prepare and submit reports and evaluations to Director and funder(s) as required
  • Establish and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other UNYA programs and other community programs/resources to ensure effective referrals and enhance access to a strong continuum of supports.  Ensure that youth are being referred to appropriate services in the community, as individual needs require.  Provide information, advocacy, and support in the referral process for internal and external programs, as well as other supports in the community.
  • Work together with UNYA Directors to foster a positive, engaging workplace environment.  Consult with and report to your Program Director on a regular basis for ongoing assessment and refinement of the program. 
  • Perform other duties deemed necessary by supervisor(s) to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operations of the program.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, 2 years of recent related experience or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of the following modalities:
    • Culture as Therapy
    • Person Centered Approach
    • Family Systems Approach
    • Trauma Informed Approach.
  • Experience in developing and delivering arts and culture programming, including traditional arts and contemporary arts.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and working effectively with Indigenous youth
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the intergenerational impacts of the residential school systems, colonization, the Indigenous Community, and an understanding and willingness to participate in Indigenous protocols, practices, and ceremonies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues, addiction issues, concurrent disorders, and FASD.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • Class 4 or 5 BC Drivers License
  • Given the needs of youth accessing our services, preference will be given to qualified Indigenous applicants.
