The Program

Northern Youth Centre is a twelve-bed Open Custody – Open Detention centre for Young Persons. in Kenora, Ontario. The Centre offers a casual and comfortable home environment situated on twenty-seven treed and rural riverside acres. The home-like environment and appointments invite engagement and encourage participation. The Centre is close to the Kenora business section for ease of networking with community services and full access to a wide range of educational, recreational, counselling and volunteer programs for the residents.

 

The Position

The youth counsellor is responsible for supervision of persons served in a strength based, therapeutic environment that provides pro-social skills, cognitive behavioural approaches in conjunction with cultural awareness, case management plans, youth management assessments, motivation/encouragement, education and evaluation of youth, dynamic and static security to ensure safety of the community, youth and staff at the program site. As a primary counselor for assigned youth(s), s/he is part of a multifunctional team that is able to recognize situations of risk and deal with them in a safe, procedural manner, ensuring a safe, nurturing environment. This position requires membership with UNIFOR.

Situated on the Lake of the Woods, Kenora is located close to the border of Manitoba, in Northwestern Ontario, approximately 200km east of Winnipeg. Scheduling:
This position will work 12 hours shifts on a 4 On / 4 Off rotation.

Duration of temporary position will be dependent on the return of the incumbent.

 

In Your Role You Will

Carry out tasks related, but not limited to:

• Program Operations
• Case Management
• House Operations
• Community Relations

 

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 3 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

 

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • A degree or diploma in related humanities or social sciences
    • Minimum three years related experience
    • Valid class G driver’s license and proof of insurability as a driver, as well as reliable transportation
    • Current First Aid / CPR Certificates
    • Immunization records, and a doctor’s note stating person is fit for work, must be submitted prior to first orientation shift

    Required Competencies:
    • Must complete training and orientation offered by the company or ministry
    • Must be orientated on fire evacuation, proper use of a fire extinguisher equipment and emergency procedures in the facility
    • Good interpersonal, written and oral communications and presentation skills
    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
    • Ability to foster, establish and maintain effective relationships with clients
    • Crisis intervention, Anger Management and Problem Solving skills are an asset
    • Motivational teachings, programming and teaching skills are helpful
    • Cooking and meal preparation skills are an asset
    • Computer skills are necessary
    • Valid class G driver’s license and proof of insurability as a driver
    • Standard First Aid Certificate and current CPR
    • Must complete PMAB training (Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour), within 30 days of hire
    • Must be trained in the policies and procedures regarding discipline and punishment of young persons
    • Must be able to work shift work (12 hour shifts)
    • CPIC (Criminal Record Check) required prior to first orientation shift and every 5 years thereafter
    • Must complete intake package upon hire and sign all necessary documents
    • Immunization records, and a doctor’s note stating person is fit for work, must be submitted prior to first orientation shift
