Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families has the following position available:


Position: Newcomer HIV Prevention Support Worker


Wage: Dependent on Experience


Location: Based out of Main Office at 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster.  Requires extensive outreach in the entirety of the Fraser Health Region


Hours: Business hours Monday – Friday


Start Date: June, 2018




The Newcomer HIV Prevention Support Worker works to assist at-risk newcomers with a variety of supports related to health and settlement services.

The Purpose Society is funded by Fraser Heath to provide services supporting people who are living with HIV, at risk of HIV, at risk of opioid overdose, as well as people who use drugs. 



  • The primary duty of this staff is to collaborate with our partners to support the health and wellness of newcomers who are at increased risk for HIV, including assistance with settlement services.
  • Provide one-on-one education around HIV risk and promote routine testing for sexually transmitted or bloodbourn infections
  • Outreach into the community to promote HIV prevention, and safer sex/drug use practices among vulnerable newcomers, including attendance at health fairs or public events
  • Partner with existing organizations that support newcomers to promote sexual health literacy and access to prevention information
  • Partner with existing sexual health services to promote and support access to tailored programing for newcomers surrounding sexual health
  • Assist clients in accessing services in the community by arranging appointments, and providing transportation, or accompaniment
  • Assist in securing and maintaining housing, income supports, employment support, and nutritional supports for individual clients
  • Maintain strong knowledge on models of HIV prevention and care for various groups, including Gay populations, Trans populations, people who use drugs, Women, Indigenous populations and persons with mental health conditions
  • Other duties as required



  • 2 year diploma in Health Sciences, Social Work, or equivalent field
  • Experience facilitating settlement services and/or HIV prevention strategies
  • Experience providing services for at-risk and/or marginalized populations
  • Strong understanding of issues relating to harm reduction practices, poverty, stigma, HIV/AIDS, mental health and substance misuse
  • Lived experience with HIV, HIV risk-factors and/or newcomer settlement issues an asset
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability to function effectively in difficult and/or crisis situations is required
  • Knowledge of local resources an asset
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and exclusive use of a vehicle
  • Clean driver’s abstract and clear criminal records check
