POSITION: OUTREACH WORKER – (Harm Reduction)

1 Temporary full-time – Powell Street Getaway

Position is temporary until incumbent returns

 

SALARY: $22.38  per hour to start (as per the Collective Agreement)

 

HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK:

  • Tuesday through Saturday
  • Shift times will be between 13:00 to 21:00 hrs.
  • Shifts are 7.5 hours in length
  • Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice
  • Probationary/ qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Outreach Worker with a focus in Harm Reduction assists people of disengagement by providing support, direction, assistance and advocacy services to a wide variety of Lookout clients including mentally ill individuals, those with HIV challenges and clients who are having difficulty establishing and maintaining a stable living environment, accessing or following through with treatment(s) or who do not adequately utilize needed services. The Outreach Worker assists in the development of supportive relationships in the community, including with service providers.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Will coordinates with the Needle Distribution program and other community services
  • Will ensure adequate harm reduction supplies, education and additional assistance is provided to individuals
  • Will assist clients in proper hygiene, grooming, etc.
  • Supports individuals to make healthy choices and practices through methods such as exchanging needles and provision of health and safety materials.
  • Assists clients with care to ensure cooperative, coordinated and supportive work relationships are maintained.
  • Will complete required paper work, maintain statistical data;
  • Will aid in the training/upgrading placement programs for staff, volunteers and students.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES:

  • Diploma or Certificate in Community Services preferred or minimum Grade 12 education plus minimum of two years recent related work experience and prefer a minimum of one year of case management experience or equivalent.
  • Broad knowledge and experience with health and treatment issues faced by marginalized individuals living with HIV. Demonstrates familiarity with related resources, particularly private and public housing and HIV resources.
  • Suitability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a less structured or isolated environment, strong ability to manage stress.
  • Must provide a record of a recent Criminal History check and Drivers Abstract.
  • Must have a current Class Four driver’s licence.
  • Must have current OFA 1 First Aid Certificate
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the physical/mental ability to perform the job; must be able to operate job related equipment.
  • Must have ability to understand and maintain clientele/worker boundaries.
  • Must have ability to provide work direction.
  • Must have a strong ability to relate to people in working relationships and in clientele communication.
  • Use of an automobile may at times be useful.
  • A minimum of two years sobriety is required
