Reporting to the Program Manager we are currently seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and committed individual for the following position:


JUSTICE SPECIALIST

Peel Youth Village
(Bargaining Unit)
Full Time, Permanent


Our growing organization is currently implementing a new and progressive youth and community initiative (Peel Youth Village) that will address transitional housing and community related supports and services.  The program is located in Mississauga and incorporates both housing and a community centre. The housing component is for homeless youth between the ages of 16-30 and the community centre serves residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.


Responsibilities:

  • Working in partnership with various community agencies to organize support;
  • Providing specialized case management and community outreach;
  • Providing professional care and support through direct consultation, supportive counseling, referrals and case management;
  • Assisting youth to develop specific plans to meet their objectives including emphasis on life skills and potential mentorship opportunities;
  • Teaching youth coping mechanisms and stress management techniques to respond physical and emotional barriers;
  • Preventing crisis and intervening when crisis does occur;
  • Assisting to resolve any criminal justice involvement as it pertains to probation and parole;
  • Assisting to reduce potential for recidivism;
  • Working with the courts and probation and parole.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity;
  • Degree or Diploma in Social Services, Health Services or a related field;
  • Experience with the justice system and inter-agency collaboration is essential;
  • Experience in working with youth and / or the homeless population;
  • Effective decision making skills and ability to assess a comprehensive range of variables to be able to interpret, analyze and solve problems;
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of clients and is comfortable with the self help role;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-service team;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential;
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity;
  • ASSIST training is required;
  • Must be certified in CPI, CPR and First Aid;
  • A valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a vehicle with adequate insurance coverage is also required;
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

This is a full time position working 37.5 hours per week.This position will require you to work shifts, including evenings and weekends..
