Job Description

The High Support Program consists of a team of community counsellors, and health care professionals that assist in the recovery of clients adjusting to community life.  The High Support Counsellors will functions as a member of a team to ensure the safety and security of individuals in the High Support Program. 

All interested applicants must have a strong commitment to the right and ability of each person with a severe and persistent mental illness to live in the community and have access to helpful, adequate, and continuous supports and services.  Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships, respect for client rights and personal preferences are essential.  The High Support Counsellors will report directly to the High Support Manager.

Title: High Support Counsellor – Bargaining Unit Position (1)

Location: Hansen Building

Contract Length: 18 Months

Reports To:  Program Manager 


  • Working independently and within a team to carry out mental health recovery and support functions, substance abuse interventions, education, support, consultation to families and significant others; teaching of daily living skills, residential support, and crisis prevention and intervention.
  • Identifying risk factors and incorporate effective planning to decrease risk.Establishing and implementing recovery and crisis plans with each client.
  • Administering standardized assessment/screening tools (i.e. OCAN).
  • Documenting client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures.
  • Supporting strengths in clients that will assist them in achieving goals.
  • Being a contributing member of the team, identifying and supporting treatment methods and providing day to day functioning support to meet client’s needs. 
  • Accessing community resources and incorporating them into recovery planning.
  • Participating in staff meetings and treatment /service planning review meetings.


  • Post-secondary education in a health related field.
  • Minimum of three years related experience.  
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness
  • Community Mental Health Case Management experience.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic rapport with individuals living with a serious mental illness.
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications and associated side effects.
  • Pharmacology training an asset.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply the principles of Psycho Social Rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge and experience in Justice/ORB and Addictions is a valuable asset.
  • Working knowledge of the provision of health care in a variety of settings is essential. 
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and prioritization skills.
  • Available to work rotating night shifts (including evening, week day, and weekends).
  • Current Certification in First Aid and CPR is an asset.
  • Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) training is an asset.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Possesses the personal qualities and attitudes that respect and maintain the dignity and individuality of the residents and their families.
  • Understands and is able to integrate a philosophy of client-centred care into daily responsibilities
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and the ability to support a diverse client population are essential.
  • A valid Ontario class “G” driver’s licence, and a vehicle with adequate insurance coverage. 
  • Shift work is required.

This position is a full time bargaining unit position working 37.5 hours per week.
