POSITION:     

Women’s Support Worker of Violence Prevention Programs

 

DEPARTMENT:

Specialized Programs, Family and Settlement Services

 

POSITION FUNCTION:

The Women’s Support Worker will provide Stopping the Violence Counselling Services and Multicultural Outreach Services primarily for multicultural women who have experienced, or are at risk of, abuse, threats, or violence, in an intimate relationship; and/or have experienced historical sexual abuse, sexual assault and/or childhood abuse. The services provided will be in response to the diverse needs of all women and will include psycho-education; individual and/or group counselling support; information and advocacy; and resource information and referrals.  The Women’s Support Worker will prioritize the safety of women and children and ensure that support provided is sensitive to the social, cultural, linguistic and economic values of women who are abused by their partners. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·     Post-secondary education or a combination of education and work experience in the area of violence against women, violence prevention and culturally sensitive service delivery.

·     3 to 4 years of experience working in the area of violence prevention as a frontline worker

·     Experience in group presentations on issues of abuse and violence against women.

·     Experience working with diverse groups from various disciplines and communities.

·     Knowledge of community and justice related resources available to assist women.

·     Ability to be empathetic and sensitive

·     Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·     Flexibility/adaptability

·     Good communication skills in verbal and written English language

·     Proficiency with standard office equipment and software applications

 

DESIRABLE SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

·     Car ownership an asset

·     Additional languages an asset, in Tigrinya, Dari, Farsi or Arabic

 

OTHER REQUIREMENT:

·     Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check

 

HOURS:

40 hours/week

 

   STARTING PAY:

$21.20 - $23.86/hr, depending on qualifications and experience

 

TERM:

Contract will end on March 31, 2019, with possibility of extension.
