Caregiver (Foster Parent) Support Program

Support Worker

Temporary Position – Maternity Leave

 10-20 Hours/Week

Abbotsford Community Services is seeking a Support Worker with minimum 3 years’ experience working with families in a social service setting.   

The candidate requires knowledge and skills in facilitation, case management, de-escalations of crisis situations, working with families in conflict situations, working independently and as a team, maintaining complete and organized client files, and working with groups and individuals who have experienced trauma.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with a caseload of Caregivers in their homes and community with the overall goal of sustaining successful placements and reducing problems leading to moves.
  • Maintaining files and completing notes in a timely and professional manner
  • One-on-one and group work with Caregivers aimed at reducing conflict and increasing the ability to manage problem behaviours.
  • Working with Resource SW’s and other professionals within the Care Team model.
  • Working from a client centred approach.
  • Assisting Caregiver families in making successful transitions with children/youth entering or leaving their home.
  • Assessing strengths and needs of Caregiver families and accessing appropriate community resources for both.
  • Co-facilitating psycho education/support groups for caregivers based on attachment theory and trauma informed practice.
  • Teaching and modeling advocacy skills.
  • Submitting reports and stats in accordance with program, agency, and funder policies and procedures.
  • Facilitating the learning and support of practicum students/volunteers within the program as required.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other professionals.
  • Ability to be solution focused and non-reactive.
  • Ability to recognize and debrief vicarious traumatization and actively practice self-care.
  • Other required duties which may be assigned from time to time by the Supervisor


  • Must maintain a satisfactory Criminal Records Check

Education and Certification:

  • A degree in social services or a related field. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Must Maintain:
    • May be required to be certified with Emergency First Aid
    • CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) Certification; Training in NVCI will be offered by ACS
    • Driver’s License and use of own vehicle


  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with families and youth in a social services setting.
  • Solid experience with and skills related to foster placements, and youth and children who for a variety of reasons cannot live with their original families (behavioural, mental health, abuse, neglect, alcohol and drug issues, criminal involvement, family violence, etc.).
  • Experience in training, supporting and debriefing foster parents.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the BC Foster Care System.
  • Demonstrated professional approach to working with professionals and funders.
  • Conducting group facilitation and teaching skills to various age groups (adults, children, and youth).

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice, Attachment Theory and Trust-Based Parenting Strategies, as well as familiarity and competence in their application.
  • Training and demonstrated skill in communications and informal counselling.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques and family meeting formats.
  • Training and demonstrated commitment to collaborative practices at all levels (i.e. client to community).
  • Working knowledge of Child Development, FASD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Extensive Knowledge of BC MCFD Foster Care System.
  • Mediation skills are an asset.
  • Genuine empathy, patience and skill in working with diverse clients, youth and children.
  • Ability to work in multiple capacities: independently, as a team member, and in a leadership position.
  • Working understanding of attachment theory and the dynamics of broken attachments.
  • Working knowledge of trauma informed practice and supporting research (e.g. Bruce Perry, Karen Purvis).
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of collaboration and integrated case-management.
