Building community capacity through food

 

Working closely with the Food and Education team, the Community Facilitator will promote and support food literacy through community kitchens and be an educational resource trainer for building community capacity through food. This role is responsible for establishing and deepening collaborative relationships with community kitchen hosts, facilitators and peer leaders throughout our catchment with a particular emphasis on vulnerable populations in the Downtown core, Downtown Eastside and East Vancouver neighbourhoods. The Facilitator will be responsible for overseeing programming, logistics and the development of relevant training materials and resources for the program as well as overseeing the program delivery.

 

Our ideal candidate has a solid foundation in the world of adult education and training with a passion for food and community development. Someone who has experience developing train the trainer workshops, supporting models of peer leadership as well as a track record in communicating in ways that inspire. We are looking for someone to join our collaborative team who is passionate about food as a social connector and who can bring a creative, flexible, and self-starting approach to the Community Kitchens Program

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuous development of a train the trainer model for community kitchen facilitators and peer leaders.
  • Gathering, collating and developing of resources to support community kitchen activity.
  • Supporting a cohort of peer leaders from within the community to lead community kitchens.
  • This position is expected to spend at least 60% of the time working directly with community.

Qualifications

  • Degree/diploma in Adult Education or equivalent experience.
  • A passion for food – Chef designation not required but an asset.
  • Familiarity with vulnerable populations.
  • Thorough understanding of harm reduction especially as it relates to mental health and substance abuse.

Requirements

  • Food Safe Level I
  • Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector)
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Clean BC Driver’s License

Working Conditions

This is a full-time position, permanent position, 37.5 hours a week. Monday to Friday with occasional weekends and evenings required. The position will require physically demanding work including long periods of standing, usage of stairs, and transportation to new sites weekly, assistance in set up and take down of classrooms and the movement of boxes and supplies.
