ORGANIZATION

The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia.  We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice.  We are grounded in community, and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment.  We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness.  We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.

 

EAC’s Energy Action Team inspires Nova Scotians to prosper in a future that is free of fossil fuels, where energy is used as efficiently as possible. Through education, consultation and advocacy with the public and government, we work for a just transition into this future.

 

POSITION:

 

We are seeking a full-time Building Efficiency Coordinator, who will be responsible for education, outreach and campaign work specific to energy efficiency as a climate justice solution. The Building Efficiency Coordinator will also oversee and implement an education and outreach strategy about energy efficiency to affordable multi-family housing, co-operative housing, and residential non-profit organizations. They will also work on the team’s energy efficiency policy objectives provincially, regionally, and municipally. The successful candidate will work closely with the Energy Conservation Coordinator, the Energy Campaign Coordinator, and Energy Action Team volunteers, and will report directly to the Energy Conservation Coordinator.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Designing and implementing an education and outreach strategy about energy efficiency for cooperative housing, affordable multi-family housing, and residential non-profit organizations in Nova Scotia
  • Delivering workshops and offering advice about energy efficiency upgrades and energy conservation techniques
  • Writing energy management plans for housing co-operatives
  • Writing a bi-monthly newsletter about energy efficiency
  • Supporting and developing campaigns about net-zero-ready building codes, deep energy retrofits, and energy performance labeling in buildings
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders in the energy efficiency industry
  • Preparing monthly reports, and other administrative tasks associated with program delivery
  • Participating in the collective work of the Energy Action Team, including:
    • Research and support for various projects, creating content for media, social media, and internal and external publications;
    • Identifying and supporting the pursuit of fundraising opportunities;
    • Meeting with regional, national, and international organizations and networks;
  • Supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre; and
  • Other duties as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience recommending and explaining technical energy efficiency upgrades and behavioral energy conservation measures.
  • Understanding of basic building science (e.g. moisture management, energy management, thermodynamics).
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking and workshop delivery.
  • Experience organizing and facilitating community events or workshops, and general event planning.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Project management skills: ability to work independently and as part of a team, effectively manage multiple tasks, and use time efficiently.
  • Strong interest in the greater effects of climate change on different communities and peoples based on gender, race, class, geography, etc. and the relationship between climate change and social justice.
  • Interest in and knowledge of energy systems and how they affect, benefit or harm people at the community level.
  • Available some evenings and weekends and willing to travel.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in organizing, planning and/or supporting advocacy campaigns in either a professional or volunteer capacity.
  • Experience with communications, social media and traditional mass media, and working with web-based platforms.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization, First Nation Band, co-op, labour organization, or community enterprise.
  • Experience working with vulnerable people, Indigenous communities, African-Canadian communities or other communities of colour to support their operations, projects, events or political endeavours.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Experience working with governments on policy matters.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License an asset.
  • Experience managing projects and budgets, and developing funding proposals.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

  • 30 - 37.5 hours/week at $21.00 - $23.00/hour, commensurate with experience, with 4% vacation pay
  • 6-month contract, with strong possibility of indefinite contract extension subject to confirmation of funding
  • Benefits and increased vacation days eligibility subject to contract extension

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia in EAC’s newly renovated, highly energy efficient office.
