Job Description – Mental Health Worker

Reports To:                                        Nurse Manager




Job Summary


Provides stand-by support and services to clients as necessary or when alerted either by direct client request or unusual situations. Provides a safe and secure environment and responds to emergency situations.



Functions & Responsibilities

  1. Performs security duties for the facility such as ensuring the facility is locked after hours, ensures there are no water leaks or malfunctioning equipment in operation, and that the physical environment is safe such as turning night lights on in hallways, and that stairwells, hallways, fire exits and foyers are clear of objects. Identifies potential emergencies and reports to the supervisor situations in regards to the building safety. Patrolling buildings and grounds.
  2. Monitors client interaction and behavior and provides crisis intervention. By applying established guidelines such as first response to suicide threats, clients displaying unusual behavior such as aggression, clients voicing delusions, medical emergencies and inability to settle.
  3. Administers medication and treatments to clients as required such as providing PRN medications. Observes and reports symptoms of medications such as complaints or concerns voiced by clients to the immediate supervisor. To provide support and reassurance to help the client settle for the night.
  4. Provides input to the nurse and other health care providers in regards to clients needs. Documents observations and concerns of clients.
  5. Completes and reads related records and documentation such as progress reports, statistics and daily logs.
  6. Receives client feedback, enquiries and complaints from clients and responds to same. Reports client concerns, complaints and enquiries to immediate supervisor.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education, Training & Experience

  1. Minimum grade 12 education
  2. Food Safe Course
  3. First Aide Course – S.O.F.A.
  4. Front line training for residential settings and/or minimum one-year experience or related education.


Skills & Abilities

  1. Ability to communicate with health professionals and emergency services.
  2. Ability to write and read routine reports and correspondence.
