The Yonge Street Mission is a Christian faith-based not-for-profit community called to demonstrate God’s love, peace and justice to those living with economic, social and spiritual poverty in Toronto.  Our Employment Services (ES) is looking to hire a full-time Employment Counsellor (EC) that operates under Employment Ontario (EO) guidelines.  The EC will work primarily to deliver service to our participants within the ES model.



The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing employment counselling, including: screening, intake, assessment, goal setting, monitoring, referrals and life skills support to street-involved youth, newcomers to Canada and other marginalized communities
  • Outcome focused case-management with the ability to support itinerant services, workshop development/facilitation and program innovation
  • Advocacy with various community agencies
  • Maintaining a safe space for diverse participants, including the LGBTQ community, racialized participants, and people living with mental illness
  • Managing client information in EO Information System and internal database
  • Collaborating effectively with the employment services team


The successful candidate will have the following skills and training:

  • Post-secondary degree along with 2 years relevant work experience
  • Experience working with diverse youth facing multiple barriers to employment
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment, counselling, and case management
  • Ability to draw on strong motivational and rapport-building skills in a cross-cultural context
  • Results oriented with superior oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable in an unpredictable drop-in environment; ability to de-escalate conflict and interact with participants who have experienced various forms of trauma
  • Knowledge of job search strategies, Canadian Labour Market, and standard workplace practices
  • Strong administrative skills with attention to detail
  • A police check will be required / First aid training is an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values
