Summary: 

The Accountant is a highly relational position and it is essential that the Accountant embraces a stakeholder cultivating attitude and focus on customer service.  The incumbent is expected to cultivate relationships with all contact points, ensuring that each contact’s communication experience and resolution is positive as evidenced by feedback systems.

The Accountant performs a range of professional and detailed accounting activities for Independent Living (IL) program under the direction of the Financial Services Manager. The activities include accounts reconciliation, journal entries, month-end and year- end close, financial analysis and transaction investigation and adjustment.

The incumbent is also responsible for completing the internal and external financial reports such as Ontario Healthcare Reporting Standards (OHRS) Trail Balance Submission; organizing communications from funders and updating financial and statistical master sheets timely and accurately. As a member of the IL Finance team, the Accountant actively supports the budgeting and forecasting development process by assisting with data requirement for timely completion. 

 

Duties:

  • Develop and maintain monthly journal entries. 
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and generate correction entries as necessary.
  • Investigate and analyse discrepancies, identify root cause and create adjustment entries by applying accounting standards, MODC and funder policies; communicate the results or action plan with program. 
  • Analyse monthly variances between budget/forecast and actual financial results; provide accurate, complete and timely month end narrative analysis to Financial Services Manager for review. 
  • Prepare financial and statistical data for Ontario Healthcare Reporting Standards (OHRS) Trial Balance submission on quarterly basis. Fulfil other external reporting requests as required.
  • Assist with IL budget and forecast process from data preparation, collection to data validation.  
  • Maintain financial and statistical data master sheet as per information from Multi-Sector Accountability Agreements.
  • Work with Cooperate Service Department on facility lease management, including contacting landlords for lease renewal; preparing contract approval forms and checklist. Ensure correct accounting code are provided for setting up recurring payment.
  • Provide ongoing support to IL program staff with regards to inquiries such as creating POs in Navision, transaction coding and investigation.
  • Communicate concerns/issues raised by programs with relevant parties and provide updates to program in timely fashion.
  • Organize, maintain, follow and communicate policies, procedures, processes and guidelines to meet the program’s needs in accordance with organizational standards. 
  • Provide ongoing support for identified initiatives and other responsibilities as required
  • Provide back-up support for the Financial Services Manager as required.

Qualifications:

  • ​Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and/or Business Administration specializing in Accounting.
  • In the final stages or the completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA or CPA, CMA). 
  • 5 years practical experience in general accounting with OHRS reporting in the healthcare sector a must
  • Experience with Microsoft Great Plains or Navision software
  • Advanced computer skills and superior knowledge of computer applications with emphasis on MS Office such as Word, Power Point. Extensive experience with Excel is required.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented collaborative environment.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and handle a high volume of work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills. Demonstrate initiative in dealing with varied situations that arise, seeking direction as required.
