The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.



The Wellness Advocate is committed to helping people experiencing homelessness and poverty transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The purpose of the Health and Wellness area is to facilitate the case management of community participants at the Seed. The Wellness Advocate connects community participants with any needed external and internal resources.



  • Meet with new community participants who come to access The Mustard Seed at any of our Edmonton locations, getting new community participants referred as quickly as possible to other internal programs
  • Educate and empower community participants to understand and achieve their rights and responsibilities, as participating members of society
  • Liaise with internal and external resources that will help community participants increase their assets. This includes maintaining existing partnerships as well as developing new partnerships
  • In regards to community participants who have a Caseworker (either internally or externally), compliment the work the Caseworkers by acting as a consultant and liaison for issues that require community participants access to external resources
  • In regards to community participants who do not have a Caseworker, refer these community participants directly to internal and external resources as needed
  • Advocate for community participants as needed both to access resources within and outside the organization
  • Ensure community participants accessed external resources by completing follow up with community participants and agencies
  • Provide crisis intervention as necessary
  • Provide input into program evaluation upon request
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Build a comprehensive library and knowledge base on community resources
  • Share and disseminate community resource information
  • Track assigned community participants’ progress with external resources
  • Communicate relevant information to involved caseworkers and staff about interactions with community participants and observed behavior when appropriate
  • Document community participants interactions, community participants referrals and community participants progress on ETO
  • Track statistics and prepare reports, as required
  • Attend meetings and training, as assigned
  • Serve on internal and external committees, as requested
  • Provide input into the development of policies and procedures for designated programs
  • Keep community participants’ records and information confidential, updated and secure


  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree or Bachelor of Science/Arts Degree in Psychology or equivalent
  • 3 to 5 years of related working experience
  • Competent in use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license required and a reliable vehicle



  • This is a permanent, full-time position working from Monday to Friday at 40 hours per week where you will be based at Community Support Centre but required to be offsite at other Mustard Seed locations and external agencies
  • Time schedule varies in relation to Mustard Seed site operating hours and evening
  • Time in excess of regular working hours may be required on occasion
  • Mental effort: moderate, periods of high volume workload
  • Physical effort: moderate, extended computer use, sitting, reaching, standing, lifting, climbing stairs, and walking
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
