Kahkiyaw Ayisiyinowak ka Wahkotot – "All people, especially traditional peoples, are related" – Kahkiyaw is a new and ground-breaking Aboriginal-led and community-based program created to significantly improve the lives of Aboriginal children, youth, and families in the Edmonton and Area Children and Family Services Authority (CFSA).

 

Kahkiyaw is being delivered in partnership by Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and Boyle Street Community Services, two community organizations with a long and successful history of serving Aboriginal people in Edmonton. Working closely with CFSA Central Neighbourhood Centre, and using the Collaborative Service Delivery (CSD) model, the program will provide a continuum of services to improve the outcomes for Aboriginal children and families in our city.

 

 

Cultural Connector

 

This position is responsible for working with children/youth/families to establish or maintain their connection to Aboriginal culture, history of their people, and the community.  The Cultural Connector will work with clients to research and map out their family tree in creative ways. 

 

Job Description

  • Culturally connected and trained in facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Cultural Connectors must also have knowledge in the Indigenous culture and traditions.
  • Provide families the opportunities to learn about Indigenous culture and transport families or youth to ceremonies when needed.
  • Create cultural teachings for the youth that will allow them to feel connected to culture through ceremony
  • The Cultural Connector is responsible for providing support with Family Group Conferences (FGC), sharing circles.
  • Building relationships with First Nations Reserves is an important part in the role as Cultural Connector.
  • Must be able to connect with Designated First Nation Agencies (DFNA) representatives and build relationships.
  • Work closely with DFNA which would allow Kahkiyaw the opportunity to work closely with families that reside on the reserve and gain their support in providing safety plans with the families for their children.
  • Establishing strong relationships with families and children.
  • Linking families to community resources.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Education and Credentials

  • 3-5 years of work experience in the human services field is required.
  • Degree or diploma is an asset.
  • Having your own vehicle for transportation is a must.
  • Experience working with Indigenous families is an asset.
  • Current (within 6 months) Criminal Record check and Child & Family Intervention check, and Driver’s Abstract (without outstanding issues) is required prior to starting employment.

 

 Salary and Benefits

  • Monthly salary based on working 34.50hrs. per week.
  • Monthly auto allowance.
  • Paid sick and wellness days after 3 months’ probation.
  • Extended Health Benefit (50/50 cost sharing) after 6 months’ employment.

 

Start Date
