The Role:


The Family Centre believes that, with the right opportunities and tools, people can make choices that lead to success. For over 75 years, we have been helping Alberta families, communities, institutions and workplaces make positive choices that lead to successful outcomes. We work to strengthen family wellness and build community capacity through innovative services and collaborative partnerships to engage our most vulnerable families in caring for our children. As an agency driven by innovation, we are a place for learning and growth for staff and students. The Family Centre coordinates a practicum program for students in a Master’s in Counseling program, or equivalent, and provide them with the opportunity to work with diverse clientele both at the agency, and in the community. The Family Centre uses a Two Generation approach to guide all our services, and we strive to serve children and their caregivers together to harness the family’s full potential and to put the entire family on a path to long term health and wellness.


It is estimated that about 40% of the work of the Therapist is focused on formal counselling and group work. 60% of the work will include mentoring and supporting interns with training, paperwork, case consultations, file audits and related tasks.



  • Master's Degree or PhD in Social Work, Psychology, Pastoral Counselling or equivalent
  • Certification and registration with applicable professional association
  • Formal counselling experience
  • Experience with families is required
  • Ability to work in a team environment and flexibility in taking on new roles
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Computer literacy

Mandatory Requirements: 

  • Police Security Clearance and Child and Youth Information Systems Check (must have to start employment and renewed every 3 years)
  • Suicide Intervention Training-14 Hours (must have within 3 months of employment)
  • Aboriginal Awareness (8 hours within the first twelve months of employment and every year thereafter)

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work with children and caregivers to heal from the effects of toxic stress and complex trauma
  • Build relationships of trust with clients and other professionals
  • Use a sound theoretical basis, in particular, short term therapy techniques, to provide service to clients for a wide range of issues
  • Promote awareness of healthy brain development and effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE)
  • Assists the client in connecting with community resources (assessment and referral)
  • When the client is unable, advocates on behalf of the client and teaches client how to advocate on his/her own behalf
  • Completes administrative responsibilities on time such as client reports and daily logs
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service training and supervision meetings as required
  • Maintains a clinical record for each client, couple or family as per presenting issues
  • Stays current about regulatory or legislative developments
  • Acts as a mentor and support for interns, including providing case consults, auditing files and teaching administrative tasks
  • Works closely with Clinical Supervisor and Drop-In Single Session Counselling (DISSC) team in managing DISSC program and sites
  • Maintains on-going professional development; The Family Centre provides $400 plus two days annually for therapist professional development as well as two days of training sponsored by the agency.

Supervision and Support:


Individual meetings with the Clinical Supervisor are planned monthly to review clinical and administrative matters. Group supervision with the entire therapy team are scheduled twice a month.


Integration and Access:


In settings where the Therapists are part of an integrated team, it is vital to be fully involved in team processes directed toward integration of interventions.
