We are currently looking for self-directed, positive, engaging support workers to join our team. The hours will be casual to start and will include mornings, afternoons and some over night awake shifts as the residential group homes are open all hours of every day. The residential homes are located in Campbell River, Comox and Oyster River. The number of  hours are dependent on need and are often up to 37.5 per week if desired. 


There is the opportunity to apply for permanent positions.



Key Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative duties including but not limited to, writing in and reviewing activities in daily log books, expense recording and preparing log books for the next month, recording in communication books and medical/dental log books, maintaining and updating resident's files.
  • Administers medications and records medication dispensing information in accordance with established protocols.
  • Follows directions in Health Care Plans, and all Physicians’ orders regarding each resident.
  • Responds to all personal care requirements regarding each resident.
  • Includes each resident in meal preparation and clean-up, where appropriate, and assists each resident with eating at meal and snack times.
  • Provides each resident with socialization and life skills training, and acts as a role model for acceptable and appropriate behavior.
  • Completes cleaning and laundry tasks on a daily basis maintaining all health and safety standards.
  • Compiles the weekly grocery list, and may be responsible for the grocery shopping, as required.
  • Participates in program planning, development and implementation for each resident.
  • Develops individual activity plans for each resident
  • Participates with all residents in all scheduled activities including swimming.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of being a key worker or day programmer for an individual resident as assigned.
  • Prepares semi-annual progress reports on each resident's health and well-being, as assigned
  • Summarizes client banking on a monthly basis, as assigned
  • Attends day programming, staff meetings and Personal Service Planning (P.S.P.) meetings, as required.
  • Follow all behavioral plans and strategies in place to deal with violent and/or aggressive behaviors.
  • Supports resident’s inclusion within their own family.
  • Fosters resident’s integration into the neighbourhood and the community at large.
  • Ensures the safety of each resident in the program when lifting and transferring; and the loading and unloading of wheelchairs on and off the van (s).


We are interested in candidates with the following Qualifications


Education and Knowledge

  • Human Service Worker Certificate or equivalent
  • Certification in Community Support Worker or Residential Care Attendant


Training and Experience

  • Specialized training in behavioral management and conflict resolution
  • 3 - 6 month’s prior job related experience working with people with developmental disabilities (paid or volunteer).
  • Standard First Aid - Industry and CPR
  • Class 4 BC Drivers License (UPON 90 DAYS OF HIRE)
  • Food Safe Certification


Skills and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide a calm, healthy, positive role model to residents.
  • Ability to problem solve with residents as well as determine their needs and wants.
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations and to remain calm in difficult situations while ensuring everyone is treated with respect and dignity.
  • Ability to work as a productive and interactive team member.
  • Ability to recognize aspects of a client’s life that requires support and assistance; and to advocate for those supports and assistance.
  • Knowledge of behavioral interventions.
  • Ability to deal effectively and calmly in crisis situations.
  • Basic knowledge of program development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of augmentative communication systems to include sign language and picture symbols.
  • Knowledge of resources available within the community.
  • Knowledge of all safety aspects when dealing with residents.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
