About this Job Role (Family Support Worker-Child Care):
The Family Support Worker provides direct service delivery to children and families within the Early Years program and Out of School Care programs. The Family Support Worker is responsible for the effective planning, implementation and evaluation of client services. The Family Support Worker will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with children and families. As required, the Family Support Worker will support the work of external service providers and community partners who are directly involved in their clients’ lives. The Family Support Worker works in collaboration with the child care staff teams to ensure the best outcomes for the child and family. The Family Support Worker carries out his or her duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of conduct and practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards and contractual, legal and regulatory requirements.
Compensation: An attractive compensation commensurate with experience and education.
Program development and Delivery
  • Build meaningful and supportive relationships with the children and families in the centres.
  • Work with families to identify priorities and develop action steps to address those priorities in their family life.
  • Identify applicable community resources and act as a liaison for families.
  • Coordinate referrals to other community resources for those children who require further support based on site team and family recommendations.
  • Ensure collaboration and communication with the site teams and the family to provide information on the child’s progress on a regular basis.
  • Advocate for families in crisis, assist with problem solving and goal planning to increase their confidence in meeting the needs of their children and family.
  • Understand and implement the Alberta Curriculum Framework – Social Focus within the centre.
  • Spend time regularly with the children in the classrooms; demonstrate best practice in all areas of interaction with children.
  • Work collaboratively with centres’ teams to create meaningful opportunities for family involvement.
  • Identify resources for educators and collaborate with the educators.
  • Participate with centres’ teams to link parent programming and involvement with early learning program.
  • Plan, organize and facilitate family gatherings to ensure the group reflects the needs and interests of the families.
Program Administration
  • Seek out and participate in opportunities to develop and enhance connections with stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and current client and service records within identified systems in accordance to professional and YMCA file standards and applicable Privacy Legislation.
  • Maintain current statistical, outcome and anecdotal information regarding clients and the service within identified systems within timelines identified.
Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration
  • University Degree in Social Work or a Human Services field or equivalent.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR (childcare) & Police Intervention Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Annual registration in a professional organization as required by law if applicable.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Certification preferred.
  • 2 years of experience working directly with children and families.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience working with cultural groups, high needs and marginalized populations.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of issues related to social determents of health, individual and family assessment, group work, group facilitation, program planning and outcome evaluation.
  • Working knowledge in supportive counselling skills.
  • Working knowledge of related community, housing, education, employment, and human services resources.
  • Familiar with Licensing requirements and Accreditation standards.
  • Familiar with the Alberta Curriculum Framework.
  • Sensitive to and demonstrated knowledge of dealing with the needs of participants from.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team skills.
