The Service Navigator is a first point of contact for all people entering Bissell Centre East. The Service Navigator provides information and appropriate referrals internally and externally as well as performs a variety of administrative duties. The staff member will also develop and maintain relationships with external referral agencies and internal programs.


Specific responsibilities of the position include:

Program Delivery

  • Receive and respond to incoming calls and inquiries from walk-in participants in a courteous, polite and empathic manner.
  • Address inquiries about services provided by Bissell Centre and other community-based organizations promptly and accurately.
  • Identify and provide immediate assistance to participants entering Bissell Centre by referring them to support workers, other staff members/programs, and community-based organizations and government agencies according to their needs.
  • Book appointments with internal programs where appropriate.
  • Relay messages as appropriate or transfer to appropriate extension number/contact number. Staff member must exercise discretion and diplomacy on obtaining information from callers for persons not immediately available.
  • Provide updated information/listing to participants on accessing basic needs, employment, child care and family support, housing, income tax services, etc.
  • Provide assistance and alternative solutions to participants who are unable to access Bissell Centre support workers/services/programs.
  • Accept in-kind donations received at reception and express gratitude to donors, collect in-kind donation records and on a monthly basis input and update accurately all data and information regarding in-kind donations.
  • Assist participants to access Diaper/Formula Closet and Community Closet.
  • Use de-escalation skills and provide crisis intervention as required

General and Administrative

  • Sort, process and distribute correctly incoming and outgoing mail daily.
  • Direct and instruct volunteers in their daily duties at the front desk.
  • Connect visitors and groups with Resource Development staff.
  • Change reception area printer toner, fix errors, etc.; stock printer paper.
  • Keep public areas and main floor staff and board rooms organized, stocked and clean.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes using prescribed Bissell Centre procedures using the database, updating program information, and critical incident reports within established time standards
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Develop, implement and monitor an annual program budget in cooperation with the Director, Community Programs and Services
  • Monitor, approve and submit receipts for program expenditures


The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:


Education and Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Community Support Work or combination of other relevant education and experience
  • Employees with Social Work Diploma/Degree/Masters are required to provide and maintain ongoing registration, in good standing, with Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) as per Alberta Health Professions Act
  • Relevant experience working with adults with mental health concerns and concurrent issues is preferred
  • Minimum 1-year relevant working experience with the homeless and vulnerable population.
  • Training in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Minimum 6 months’ related working experience in typing, data input and maintenance of office equipment (printer, copier, fax)
  • Excellent typing, data entry skills, creation of forms and documents
  • Excellent customer service, written and oral communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Flexible, able to prioritize problem-solving, multi-task and deal with difficult participants in a calm and confident manner
  • Demonstrate a non-judgmental attitude, respect and patience when dealing with people who live in poverty
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Familiarity working with high risk populations and an understanding of Indigenous cultures, history and current issues
  • Familiarity with Community Based Organizations and the services they provide
