The Program

Spirit of Our Youth Homes offers trauma informed based services within a culturally enriched environment for First Nations, Metis and Inuit youth ages 3-24 years old. Our trained staff team work to optimize each youth’s potential and strengthen their connections with family and their indigenous community. We provide safe, clean, welcoming homes for the youth in our care.


The Position

Spirit of Our Youth Homes is recruiting Casual Youth Workers for our supportive youth homes in Edmonton, who are responsible for implementing the day-to-day operations in a variety of programs and locations. Casual Youth Workers are committed to promoting the personal development of youth in their care by providing and maintaining a safe, supportive home environment that is based on Aboriginal culture.


In Your Role You Will

  • Assist and support individuals with developing and achieving personal goals.
    • Ensure individuals basic needs are met (personal care, life skills and social/occupational skills)
    • Assist with day to day operation and maintenance of the residence/program facility (May include cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, changing lines or assisting the youth in care with the completion of these tasks, etc.)
    • Teach youth independent living skills such as; communication, emotional well being, problem solving, cooking, cleaning, budgeting, being a positive role model, etc.
    • Accompany and safely transport youth to and from school, on outings, and to medical appointments, as needed.
    • Supervise and participate in programming and recreational activities in order to ensure safety and the provision of a positive role model for the youth.
    • Encourage, promote and enable youth to make changes and develop age-appropriate life skills (coping, problem solving, etc.)
    • Work in cooperation with others to plan, support and/or deliver culturally appropriate programs, services, workshops, and outings; encouraging them to learn and participate in their culture.
    • Consult and collaborate with the youth, staff and other relevant individuals to identify the needs and goals of the youth
    • Connect the youth to the community resources, assets and/or contacts that will further their independence.
    • Review and complete communication, medication, daily logs, and other documentation as required while on shift and before leaving shift.


*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 3 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.


As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in the Human Services field or equivalent experience
    • 2 years experience in group homes and/or supported independent living.
    • Must provide a current (within past 6 months) criminal record check and Children’s Services Intervention check prior to confirmation of employment
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and clean driver’s abstract with personal car insurance (2 million in third party liability)
    • Must be able to deal with any crisis situations, to ensure safety for youth in the program.
    • First Aid/CPR Certificate
    • Suicide Intervention, Self Harm, Crisis Intervention and Medication Administration training
    • Aboriginal awareness and cultural diversity training
    • Able to work and follow Spirit of Our Youth Homes Inc. policies and procedures and adhere to Alberta Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
    • Knowledge of the Canadian Accreditation Council of Human Services
    • Able to lift 50 lbs.

Spirit of Our Youth was started in 2000 out of a passion for helping indigenous youth. From one home in Central Edmonton we have grown to operate five Group Homes, a Supported Independent Living program, as well as a Drive and Supervised Visits program.
