The role of the Registered Early Childhood Education is to provide a stimulating program for the Infants and Toddlers in the Childcare Centre and to provide information, resources and support on child development and parenting to the young parents attending the Humewood House day treatment program and living in the residence.


Hours of Work:          Permanent full time position, 40 hours a week




  1. Plan and supervise children’s activities
  • Participate in planning and implementing educational activities for Infants and Toddlers in the program.
  • Model positive parenting techniques in all activities in the Centre.
  • Ensure the children are adequately supervised at all times and feed the children snacks, meals and give bottles as needed.
  • Ensure routines, policies and regulations prescribed by the Childcare and Early Years Act and Humewood House are followed.
  • Observe and document children's behavior and developmental progress in their daily log.
  • Lift and carry children and related equipment eg. Strollers, playground toys, emergency equipment as necessary for walks, outings and/or in emergency situations.


  • 2. Maintain physical environment
  • Create a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment for the children.


  • Assist in maintenance of an orderly and pleasing environment in the Centre and Humewood house to ensure the environment conforms to health and safety standards and City Criteria.


  • Keep storage areas neat and program supplies clean.


  • Report all accidents or incidents promptly to the Infant Centre Supervisor or designate.


  • Take responsibility for the care and use of playroom and playground equipment. Report any loss or damage to the Infant Centre Supervisor.

  1. Provide information, resources and support to young mothers
  • Assist residential program in having clients complete their post natal checklist.
  • Work closely with the residential staff to support the residents’ transition effectively into parenthood.
  • Participate in the case reviews of students and residents with infants.
  • Provide support, information and resources to staff regarding child development, childcare and special needs.
  • Support fathers and other caregivers if parenting their child.
  1. Carry out administrative responsibilities
  • Complete attendance for children and input on the Childcare Licensing system.
  • Answer the phone, receive and welcome visitors to the Centre, provide information by telephone, fax, or in person.
  • Maintain waiting list.
  • Observe and document children’s behavior and developmental progress in the program using the Nippissing and ASQ developmental screen.
  • Supervise field placement students in the Childcare Centre and evaluate their performance.
  • Participate in determining the supplies and equipment needs for the program.
  • Act on behalf of the Infant Centre supervisor when required.
  • Ensure licensing and criteria are maintained at Ministry and City Standards.
  1. Staff Team Member
  • Participate appropriately on the staff team through positive communications at team meeting and through written or verbal communications as necessary;
  • Participate in regular supervision.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and agency functions as appropriate.
  • Act as a role model by carrying out duties in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, philosophy and values of the Childcare Centre at Humewood House.
  • Attend and participate in training opportunities internally and externally.


  • Education - ECE diploma and Registered with the College of ECE.
  • Two years experience in a group care Centre with infants and Toddlers.
  • Experience working with youth is an asset.
  • Current First Aid and CPR standard level C.
  • Understanding of infant attachment. Certificate in Infant Mental Health an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of major responsibilities.
  • Computer literacy required and ability to work on the client database.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate programs for children.
  • Sound knowledge of the Childcare and Early Years Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Caring and compassionate.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Understanding of issues related to poverty, homelessness and teen parenting.
  • Ability to work co-operatively and effectively as a member of the Childcare Centre and the Humewood House multi disciplinary staff team.
