Hope Lutheran Church in Edmonton, Alberta, is looking to hire a part- time to full-time PARISH WORKER for a contract period of up to one year, to start between August 1 and August 31 (negotiable).

 

Who we are: Hope Lutheran Church, located in the Gold Bar area of Edmonton, is an established congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada that has served the community and surrounding area for over forty years. Hope Lutheran is a small congregation with big aspirations that leads us to pursue ministry that will care for those in our midst and to offer family-oriented ministry focused on reaching children and families in our community.

 

Who we are seeking: We are seeking to fill a parish worker posting for a part-time position up to a full-time position to plan, develop and implement both a seniors' outreach ministry and a dynamic and outgoing ministry directed to children and families in our community. Reporting directly to the Council Executive, this would be a contract position lasting up to one full year. For the ideal candidate, some or all of the features of this position may be negotiable.

 

Mandatory responsibilities:
- Children's education (Sunday School and one education event during the week).
- Develop a team of volunteers to assist with Sunday School, and the weekly education event.
- Oversee a summer VBS program and coordinate special children's seasonal events (Christmas, Easter).
- Develop a seniors' outreach ministry with at least one event involving some physical activity during the week.
- Oversee and coordinate special seasonal events for seniors' interests.
- Attend staff meetings and report regularly to the Council Executive. Provide input on strategic planning, budgeting and curriculum.
- Maintain regular contact with the Pastor.

 

Preferred and optional responsibilities:
- Expansion on any of the initiatives relating to children and family ministry and to seniors' care and outreach ministry as detailed under the mandatory responsibilities.
- Assume maintenance of some office hours. As required, submit articles to the Sunday bulletin and monthly messenger for the information of the Congregation.

 

Who you may be:
- Passionate and committed about your faith and relationship with Jesus Christ and sharing it with others.
- Passionate about sharing your time and talents with seniors, children and their families.
- Self-motivated, self-directed, dependable and enthusiastic.
- Works well with others and builds relationships.
- Comfortable working in a multi-generational environment.

 

Requirements and Abilities:
- Availability on Sunday mornings and available on at least one weekday late afternoon/evening.
- Knowledge of child development and age-specific educational methodologies for children suitable in a church environment.
- Creatively communicate God's Word to children.
- Ability to interact with seniors recognizing their unique abilities and desire to be involved in the church's ministry.
- Agree with and abide by Hope Lutheran's constitution, mission statement and relevant policy and procedure documents.
- Able to provide satisfactory criminal record and other required social service checks.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
- Relevant working experience with children in an educational setting.
- Training specific to, or experience with, inter-generational ministry.
- Regularly attending and active in ministry in a church.
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field or equivalent life experience strongly preferred.
