PCRS requires a Youth Care Worker for a special education and counselling program that integrates academic programming and recreational activities with individual and group counselling. Honour secondary school is designed for students aged 13 to 19 who require a more supportive environment with a higher staff to student ratio.

 

Position Summary:

The Youth Care Worker is a member of the team responsible for the emotional and school needs of youth in PCRS school programs. The core role is to provide basic care and nurturing, set reasonable expectations and limits, to participate in planning the achievement of identified goals for individual youth and to assist the teacher with curriculum planning and development. This requires a sound understanding of both normal and delayed or problematic development behaviours and barriers, impulsivity, attachment issues, the effects of trauma, and learning disabilities such as FASD and ADHD. Specific skills such as program development, sports, arts and crafts, and recreation planning are an asset in engaging youth in meaningful activities.

 

The successful applicant will possess a strong ability to provide assessment, behavior management, and assist the teacher in the classroom with curriculum development and student tutoring, preferably in Math and Science. As part of a team of youth care workers and teacher(s), the applicant will have strong skills in teamwork, group dynamics and program development.

 

Academic and Job Experience Required:

B.A. in a related field plus one-year related experience working in a high school OR Child and Youth Care Diploma plus three year's experience working with multi-barriered or vulnerable youth.

                                             

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal record check including the vulnerable sector
  • Standard first aid and CPR
  • Class 5 Driver’s license and driver’s abstract
  • Use of own vehicle with reimbursement
  • Sound judgement, tact and effective interpersonal skills

Desired Requirements:

  • Sexual abuse training
  • Substance abuse/addictions counselling training
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Learning disabilities training including FASD, ADHD, early childhood education, special needs
  • Bronze swimming medallion
  • Other certification in recreation or sports

Salary Range:     $23.31/hour – $26.53/hour, Plus benefit package (100% employer-paid)
