ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

TheatreOne is a registered charitable, not for profit society which has been providing professional theatre in Nanaimo for over 25 years, currently under the artistic directorship of David Mann. The company presents and produces three shows annually in its MainStage season, a children’s program, Just Kidding, and a play development program which workshops new works, Emerging Voices. It also runs Fringe Flicks, an alternative film series with loyal audiences that has become an important financial pillar of the company.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting through the President to the Board of Directors, the General Manager is charged with oversight and management of all facets of TheatreOne’s operations. The role includes responsibility for advancing the strategic priorities of the company, with a focus on building our financial base and thus our ability to develop and produce new plays.  The incumbent is also responsible for effective operations of the office, financial management and oversight, community relations, the marketing and delivery of our programs and fundraising – all supported by volunteers, an active Board, one part-time employee and contracted help as needed. 

 

The position will average 30 hours/week, with three weeks holidays and flexibility in work arrangements.  Salary range is $35,000 - $40,000 per annum, commensurate with experience.  Start date to be determined.

 

I             KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

With input from and in collaboration with the Artistic Director and Board members:

 

Leadership, Management and Supervision

  • participate in the company’s planning processes, contributing to development of strategic priorities and creating operational plans to achieve strategic goals
  • Engage, manage, support and supervise TheatreOne staff, volunteers and non-performance contracted help
  • Negotiate contracts and provide contractual, logistical and other required support for actors and non-performance professionals, consistent with the requirements of PACT and Equity
  • Oversee the delivery of TheatreOne programs to ensure the customers’ experience is efficient, professional and welcoming

 Revenue Generation

  • Identify and pursue sponsorship opportunities
  • Develop and manage a donor strategy to build and sustain a strong donor base
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for grants through major funding agencies, foundations and other sources and work with the Artistic Director to prepare grant applications
  • Identify and pursue other opportunities for generating revenues, acting as event manager when needed

 

Marketing and Community Relations

  • Direct and oversee realization of marketing strategies for TheatreOne offerings and related publicity
  • Build networks to promote TheatreOne in the community; in the absence of the Artistic Director act as TheatreOne’s representative at public events

 

Financial management and accountability

  • In consultation with the Artistic Director and the Treasurer, prepare the annual budget
  • Monitor, control and report monthly on the current financial situation, including financial statements, variance reports, cash flow projections and budget forecasts
  • Ensure the accuracy of day to day financial transactions and the integrity of related systems such as box office, accounts payable, payroll and banking activities; liaise with the Bookkeeper to ensure bookkeeping functions are accurate and timely

 Administration

  • Ensure the effectiveness of systems, processes and procedures underpinning office operations
  • Ensure TheatreOne operates in accordance with its internal policies and meets its obligations, e.g.; Regulatory and reporting requirements, the provisions of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) etc.
  • Carry out related responsibilities

 

Board Relations

  • Establish and sustain a collaborative working relationship with the President and with individual Board members
  • Attend Board meetings and provide written monthly reports; provide advice and analysis as needed for Board decision-making
  • Alert the President and Board to issues potentially affecting the interests of the company; keep Board advised of progress toward organizational goals
  • Provide support to special Board initiatives such as fundraising
  • Support development of Board policies, Board recruitment and orientation of new Board members.

 

II     SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Organizational and administrative skills
  • Experience in financial management and administration
  • Writing and communications skills, interpersonally and in public forums
  • Networking skills, ideally with experience in fundraising and donor programs
  • Management experience, preferably with a performing arts company – experience in the administration of a theatre company is an asset
  • Experience with Board governance and in working with an engaged Board
  • Familiarity with a broad range of technology and computer applications; social media platforms; etc.
