The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Mustard Seed is committed to helping people transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. Supportive Housing at The Mustard Seed provides a safe and supportive environment to all residents. Reporting to the Director of Clinical Operations and Programs, the Veteran Peer Support worker will ensure the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of the residents in our Home for Heroes Supportive Housing program and work collaboratively with their support systems to encourage resident independence, community engagement and housing stability. The support worker will work to build strong ties with the veteran community and their families within Calgary, will support veterans with life skills and any recovery issues to include listening, encouraging, coaching, empowering, and connecting them to resources to meet their individual needs.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Duties:

  • Providing peer support, peer counselling, group facilitation, outreach engagements, social and community event planning, (community kitchens/movies night) as well as coordinating referrals to outside community organizations
  • Linking and coordinating with existing community service providers
  • Assisting peers currently residing in the veteran’s village, in retaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process
  • Providing guidance and services to veterans to achieve their highest level of independence and assists in the daily implementation of day-to-day basic residential services
  • Educate and empower residents to understand and achieve their rights and responsibilities as participating members of society
  • Continuously undertaking resident assessments to ensure residents are meeting their own goals of self-sufficiency and stability
  • Supporting the working relationship between the resident and their Support Network; Ensuring clear lines of communication with outside organizations who serve the residents
  • Referring residents to The Mustard Seed services and collaborating with those services; providing information about community supports
  • Managing the relief pool
  • Welcoming and supporting volunteers when necessary
  • Front Desk and patrols

Administration

  • Building a comprehensive library and knowledge base on community resources
  • Sharing and disseminating community resource information
  • Documenting resident interactions, resident referrals, progress and any change in behaviour
  • Completing regular reassessments ; Completing Resident Care Plans when necessary
  • Completing incident reports and daily logs in a timely manner
  • Communicating relevant information to Caseworker about interactions with guests and observed behavior
  • Tracking statistics and prepare reports, as required
  • Attending training to obtain knowledge about topics such as Suicide Awareness, PTSD, Depression, Military Sexual Trauma, and Substance Abuse
  • Serving on internal and external committees, as requested
  • Providing input into the development of policies and procedures for designated programs
  • Keeping resident’s records and information confidential, updated and secure

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Diploma or an undergraduate degree in related field
  • Background in military and social services
  • Minimum of 3 year of experience working with marginalized individuals
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work within a cross-functional team
  • Competent in use of MS Office
  • Excellent interpersonal, administrative, time management and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently
  • Conflict resolution skills and ability to manage residents in crisis situations
  • A passion to be part of ending homelessness in Alberta

OTHER INFORMATION

  • This position is located at 36th Street SE
  • Fulltime position: Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 4.30pm
  • Employment Security Check is required
