Position Summary

TWC is operated by a small group of highly skilled, paid staff, supported by several hundred volunteers who work in all areas, from wildlife care to administration.  Volunteers range from teenagers to seniors and come from all walks of life; some have been giving their time freely for many years and new volunteers are joining us regularly.

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing the volunteer team, coordinating and developing the Volunteer Program and liaising with other TWC programs and other external organizations as needed. This position requires experience working with volunteers, a strong administrative background, multitasking, and the ability to prioritize and communicate well in a fast-paced environment. As an environmental organization working with hundreds of species, including some at-risk species such as Blanding’s turtles, we could not do our critical work without our volunteers.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Provide a positive, professional and safe working environment at all times
  • Volunteer management including: recruitment, orientation, scheduling, training, attendance monitoring and maintenance of volunteer records and data
  • Provide assistance with orientation and volunteer’s introduction to TWC
  • Liaise with TWC staff and volunteers to keep all programs cohesive and to meet Centre needs
  • Keep abreast of current volunteer management methods through literature perusal, conference attendance, networking and other sources
  • Evaluate, update and expand existing programs, protocols/manuals and other material
  • Develop new and innovative ways of improving experiences and recognizing achievements of volunteers
  • Assist with all aspects of the Volunteer Program, including evaluation, updating and expansion of existing programs, manuals, training protocols, etc.
  • Contribute to new and innovative ways of improving volunteer experiences, recognizing achievements, and participating in engagement, recognition and social events
  • Some involvement with public relations, fundraising, administrative duties and other duties as needed
  • Responsible for retention of volunteers through recognition, conflict resolution, regular communication, relationship building, and other means
  • Assist with setting of Volunteer Program goals and strategic planning
  • Provide information to the Executive Director and Operations Manager for assessing Volunteer Program budget for the next fiscal year

Requirements

  • Graduate of a volunteer management program or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing a medium to large volunteer program in a professional setting
  • Strong administrative experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership, training and facilitation skills
  • Problem solver and critical thinker
  • Commitment to excellence
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Professional, highly organized and self-motivated
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, high proficiency in computer skills and presentations
  • Active and outgoing with the ability to engage youth and adults from a broad range of backgrounds and ages
  • Valid driver’s license; own vehicle available for occasional use an advantage
  • Genuine concern for and understanding of wildlife and environmental issues
  • Must be available to work some weekends as required
