ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES

Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to at-risk, homeless, and street-involved youth under 25. Vancouver’s most vulnerable youth can connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs several facilities and programs for youth throughout Vancouver.

 

Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing all kinds of life’s challenges.

 

JOB SUMMARY

This is a 35 hours per week position reports to the Manager of the program. This position is located at the Kettle on Burrard. The 10K Supported Housing Program supports youth 16-19 years old who transitioning to independent living and out of ministry care. The 10K Housing team provides 1-1 support, life-skills training and group workshops. The youth are encouraged to develop goals and links to appropriate services to address their immediate and long-term needs.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create rapport and trusting, non-judgmental relationships with youth in the 10K Supported Housing program.
  • In collaboration with the 10K Program Coordinator, support the creation and monitoring the youth’s individualized service plans with the support MCFD/VACFSS and their identified care team.
  • In collaboration with the 10K Program Coordinator, create and facilitate workshops and group activities that meet the needs of the youth
  • Work with the youth to explore issues relevant to their health/wellbeing, education/vocational, cultural/community needs to plan for a smooth transition to independent living.
  • Maintain facility upkeep including cleaning, laundry, inventory and restocking of supplies.
  • Maintain professional, positive relationships with government and community partners.
  • Maintain accurate logs, record keeping, and data entry related to youth files and statistics.
  • Responsible for reading youth files and ensuring information is accurate, current and clear.
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of current best practices and available resources regarding youth transitioning to independent living and out of ministry care.
  • Ensure clear and concise communication and information transfer to colleagues and management including shift change.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions and performance evaluation process.
  • Adhere to all program and agency policies and procedures.

 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and training:

  • Completion or in pursuit of Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology or other related degrees/diploma and/or five years of related experience.
  • Current First Aid, FoodSafe Level 1 and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
  • Knowledge of issues/needs of youth with ministry care experience, high risk behaviour and/or street involvement
  • Knowledge of the harm reduction model and low barrier resources.
  • Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience assisting at risk youth in crisis.
