Manager, Indigenous and Coastal Communities Engagement 


The Manager, Indigenous and Coastal Communities Engagement is responsible for providing strategic advice and also planning and implementing a broad range of engagement activities related to Clear Seas’ vision and mission. He or she will collaborate with the Executive Director to manage and adapt Clear Seas’ Engagement strategy regarding Indigenous and Coastal communities. 


Key Responsibilities and Expectations: 

  • Direct report to the Executive Director. As a key member of a small highly-motivated matrixed team, provide input into all aspects of Clear Seas’ activities with a focus on Indigenous and Coastal Communities. 
  • Develop and implement an integrated programme of engagement with Indigenous and Coastal communities across Canada. 
  • Initially focusing on British Columbia, nurture relationships with leaders of Indigenous and Coastal communities in Canada in order to provide Clear Seas with a deeper understanding of the marine challenges and emerging issues of importance to these communities. 
  • Provide Indigenous and Coastal communities with a greater understanding of Clear Seas’ mission, programme of work, and of Clear Seas’ potential as a resource on marine shipping sustainability issues. 
  • Develop opportunities for the incorporation of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge into Clear Seas’ research and communications programmes. 
  • Engage Indigenous and Coastal communities for input into Clear Seas’ programme of work. 
  • Assist in broadening awareness of and strengthening Clear Seas’ reputation within Indigenous and Coastal communities. 
  • Develop bespoke communication and engagement materials tailored to Indigenous and Coastal Communities. 
  • Assist the Executive Director and staff in the development of periodic reports. 
  • Remain abreast of current affairs and issues facing Canada’s marine environment and marine shipping. 
  • Lead engagements and work across a diverse range of stakeholders (three levels of government, port authorities, NGOs, special interest groups, private industry) and Indigenous and Coastal communities to understand all perspectives across Canada’s broad and diverse coastline and waterways. 

The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with a background in environmental studies and extensive knowledge of Indigenous communities and issues. An interest or experience in environmental stewardship, local or global economic issues and/or the marine shipping industry will be an asset. 



  • Degree in Indigenous Relations, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related field and a minimum of three years of directly related experience 
  • Excellent communications and presentation skills. 
  • Experience in leading and/or facilitating effective operation of multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational teams. 
  • Experience with Indigenous issues and principles of collaboration. 
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities. 
  • Bilingual French/English an asset.
