This position is permanent, full-time and reports to Employment Services Manager. This position will also receive direction from Community Space Team Lead and the Community Space Manager when in the Community Space.

 

This is a dual role position. This role will consist of 60% community engagement in the Community space, 20% workshop leadership, and 20% administration.  The purpose of this role is to coordinate pre-employment programs 6 times a year and for the remainder of the time act as an Employment Support Worker in the Community Space whose role is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants accessing the Community Space as well as coordination and facilitation of drop in style programming that builds skills and empowers participants.

 

Responsibilities

 

Training Facilitation

  • Supervise and facilitate six courses of the pre-employment program annually
  • Maintain a database of relevant external employment resources
  • Meet with participants and assess their employment and education background, health needs and employment goals and explain the various employment training opportunities that Bissell Centre offers and the registration procedure
  • Provide crisis intervention supports to individuals
  • Recruit and select participants for each program course based on program requirements
  • Develop a flexible program schedule for the year with repetition of the workshops
  • Provide follow up support after program completion
  • Promote skill development workshops internally and externally
  • Enter detailed and accurate client data into appropriate databases
  • Fulfill ESW duties within Casual Labour upon occasion.
  • Other duties as assigned

Employment Support Worker

  • Employ Restorative Practices to create an inclusive and welcoming environment
  • Engage participants in intentional and purposeful conversations, in order to gauge their employment readiness and encourage them to explore employment opportunities and establish goals
  • Act as a liaison between the Community Space and Employment Services departments in order to provide a supported referral for participants who are seeking support with employment
  • Support participants to meet their own immediate needs and resolve challenges in a sustainable manner
  • Develop opportunities and support an environment where participants can build support networks to be sustainably interdependent in their community
  • Use de-escalation skills and provide crisis intervention as required
  • Help build a culture that supports and develops participants’ and the community’s strengths.
  • Program coordination and facilitation of programs and workshops in accordance with educational objectives using materials and instructional methods appropriate for adult learners
  • Orientation, ongoing training, meetings, supervision and support of volunteers
  • Ensure participants’ voices are heard in decisions that affect them
  • Encourage and support participants to achieve their goals through accessing internal and external resources and services
  • Assess, refer, and support participants through systems navigation
  • Identify gaps and barriers in service delivery
  • Assist participants to access Bissell Centre basic need services available in the Community Space, such as coffee, laundry, showers, food, haircuts and the Community Closet.

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related area
  • An understanding of employment resources and labour market information
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in program coordination and facilitation
  • Familiarity with Indigenous culture and history is required
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core is an asset

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and results oriented
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

 

Screening Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check
  • Child Intervention Record Check
  • Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract is an asset
