Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the position of a Permanent, Full Time Employment Support Worker. Employment Services provides an integrated approach to assist participants entering or re-entering the workforce. Employment Support workers practice a strength-based, client-centered approach to move participants from poverty to prosperity. Employment Support workers also guide participants through the departments multiple employment supports including; resume writing, supported job searches, pre-employment programs, a jobs club and a transitional to full time work program.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Provide employment counseling, job search assistance and crisis intervention to individuals who are homeless, have multi-barriers, and immigrant populations.
  • Work collaboratively with Casual Labour Team Lead to register new employers, explain casual labour policies and conducting satisfaction employer callbacks
  • Work in a team to facilitate the Casual Labour program, which includes: registering participants, inputting job orders, dispatching workers to job sites, maintaining records of worker attendance, and distributing clothing and work equipment.
  • Support participants to reach their employment goals through accessing appropriate internal Employment Services programs or assist in accessing other external resources or services
  • Assist in ensuring the Drop-In is a welcoming and safe environment for all participants
  • Use de-escalation skills and provide crisis intervention as required, as well as, resolve minor disputes between workers and employers
  • Enter detailed and accurate client data into appropriate databases
  • Attend regular meetings and trainings as required
  • Other duties as assigned


Working Conditions:

  • Working closely with participants who are experiencing complex life situations
  • Hours of work will vary based on the need of the community


The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:  

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year relevant employment experience
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal Cultural Resources, Ceremonies and Protocols is an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks are required
  • Must be able to work early morning shift (6:30 AM to 2:30 PM), Wednesdays until 4:00 PM and Fridays until noon
