CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario/Éducation juridique communautaire Ontario) (www.cleo.on.ca) is seeking Online Legal Content Writers with experience in legal publishing or legal practice, and strong writing skills.


CLEO is a not-for-profit organization and legal clinic that provides information for low-income and disadvantaged communities across Ontario. For almost 45 years, CLEO has built a strong reputation for producing and delivering
high-quality, easy-to-understand public legal education and information (PLEI) materials in print, online, and other formats. Steps to Justice (www.stepstojustice.ca) is our premier source of online legal information for people in Ontario.  


We are seeking experienced legal practitioners to help us develop legal information for Steps to Justice in the areas of:

  • Substitute decision-making
  • Provincial offences
  • Canada Pension Plan
  • Education law
  • Indigenous family law
  • Health & disability
  • Human rights
  • Consumer law, including cell phones and energy contracts
  • French language rights

These are part-time, freelance positions.


Job responsibilities include:

  • Researching and writing legal content in the various areas of law noted above, working to the Steps to Justice style guidelines and structure
  • Working with external legal experts and clear language editors to ensure legal accuracy and plain language
  • Working collaboratively with CLEO staff and partners


The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor
  • Minimum three years’ experience practising law in Ontario in one of the areas of law noted above or three years’ experience in legal publishing
  • Experience working in the non-profit sector, online publishing, communications, or other relevant experience
  • Understanding of the unique needs faced by low income and marginalized people
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills, and understanding of writing for the web
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office
