The YMCA of Northern BC offers a quality recreation program for residents of the Simon Fraser Lodge complex care facility.  We provide services 7 days per week from approximately 8:30am to 8:00pm including weekends and statutory holidays.  Casual as well as Fulltime staff are required for a variety of shifts. 


Purpose and Objective

Reporting to the Coordinator of Recreation Services at Simon Fraser Lodge, you will be an essential member of our team.  As a recreation leader, you will fulfill a wide range of duties, including one on one support, activities, outings, and special events for residents of a long-term care facility and their families. 


Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Help organize, conduct, evaluate and document recreation activities at Simon Fraser Lodge
  • Carry out recreation programs including activities such as arts and crafts, sports, music, woodworking, cooking, gardening, ad exercises as directed, following the “Eden” or “Social” model of care
  • Carry out resident recreation programs outside the facility, ensuring that residents have appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity. Confirm details of the proposed activity with nursing/ rehabilitation/ medical staff.  Coordinate resident participation in the activity including reaching techniques of related activities
  • Provide input into the range, scope, and details of recreational programs
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment, tools, and materials and report malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the Recreation Coordinator
  • Be responsible for domestic pet populations, ensuring the health and safety of both residents and pets
  • Be responsible for indoor and outdoor gardens
  • Provide direction and support to volunteers during programs and demonstrate related techniques as required
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team conferences, resident council meetings, and other relevant meetings as required/ requested
  • Liaise with resident family members as indicated and appropriate



  • Relevant education and/or experience in related field such as social services, social work, nursing, seniors, adults with disabilities, therapeutic recreation
  • Understanding of dementia and related impacts
  • Physical ability to complete the tasks
  • Satisfactory criminal record check and clear vulnerable sector search
  • Three satisfactory professional references

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to establish rapport and build positive relationships with diverse populations, including vulnerable seniors with complex needs and challenging behaviors and their families
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with seniors and an understanding of dementia and related impacts
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Ability to take direction, and work independently and as part of a team
  • Proven computer skills and ability to work with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and remain focused within a changing work environment
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • Willingness to complete a criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
  • Willingness to secure a doctor’s note confirming ability to perform the job
  • Willingness to do a tuberculosis screening
  • First aid certification
  • Food safe certification
