Are you passionate about the power of food bringing people together?  Do you see yourself as a culinary mastermind for large groups of people, an avid gardener, and passionate about the cycle of food beginning from the garden and into the kitchen? Do you enjoy working on a team that is passionate about the power of resident led programming and initiatives? The Community Engagement Coach will create a safe home environment for up to 20 residents (who due to histories of trauma and currently related mental illness and additions require enhanced levels of housing support) through utilizing non-judgmental, harm reduction, and trauma informed approaches.


We believe that the more people are included and involved in all aspects of the household the better the home will be. We are looking for a Community Engagement Coach who will actively build genuine relationships with residents in order to build connections and foster a sense community between residents within the home and externally with the surrounding community.  Through using a holistic approach that incorporates natural law, you will focus on: engaging residents in cooking delicious meals and cleaning after meals, modeling safe food practices and healthy interactions at the dinner table, engaging residents in gardening and yard beautification projects, discovering residents’ own skills and knowledge, and maintaining a safe and clean home environment.


Hours: Part-time: Saturday and Sunday: 9:00am to 5:00pm.

In Your Role You Will

  • Plan and prepare meals twice per day in accordance with residents’ preferences in alignment with the Canada Food Guide and licensing requirements for 20 residents.
  • Connect and include residents in the cycle of food production through cultivation and care of a community garden.
  • Assist in maintaining food inventory and kitchen supplies in accordance with food budget.
  • Develop programming in collaboration with the Community Engagement Coordinator that enhances community engagement and initiatives internally and externally with residents and the program.
  • Inform and receive information to integrated staff team regarding: progress of residents, changes in behavior, and challenges that residents may be experiencing.
  • When natural opportunity arises, promote conflict resolution, positive communication, empathy and respect (through positive reinforcement, role modeling and supportive listening).
  • Provide non-judgmental support for residents who are under the influence or are experiencing mental health struggles.
  • Administer medication for all residents.
  • Clean and maintain household to ensure compliance with all legislation, bylaws and standards (health, safety, fire, city and accreditation).
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders and act as a point of contact for the community during the daytime hours.


Education and Certifications

  • Diploma in the area of human services, education, administration and/or a related field.
  • Personal lived experience of addictions, mental illness, racism, discrimination, poverty is an asset.
  • Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector.
  • Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Required (or willingness to obtain): First Aid and CPR, Medication Administration, Suicide Intervention, Food Safety Training
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Proof of Vehicle Registration and Vehicle Insurance (with 2 million dollar liability coverage), 3 Year Driver’s abstract and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Recommended: Mental Health First Aid, De-escalation Certificate, Harm Reduction Training and Cultural Awareness, Motivational Interviewing.


  • 1+ years of related direct service work experience working with diverse communities with varying and complex priorities and needs
  • 1+ years of experience doing small scale food production and horticulture
  • Experience facilitating community development initiatives
  • Working knowledge and experience with harm reduction, person-centered, trauma-informed, behavior modification, natural law, strength based, collaborative, and/or solution focused practice.
  • Proven ability to foster a team environment.
  • Experience working in collaborative partnerships.
