The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS), a non-profit, humanitarian organization is seeking a Business Partner to join our People Services Department for Atlantic Canada Operations.  This is a unique opportunity to work with a world recognized brand, shape the culture of the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) and to put your passion for people leadership to work for vulnerable people across the world.


Reporting to the Senior Business Partner, People Services (PS) with a dotted line to the Director of HELP, the People Service Business Partner, HELP acts as a main resource for people services support and leadership including but not limited to, employee relations, performance management, coaching and development, recruiting, training, workforce and succession planning, organizational structure and change in accordance with Canadian Red Cross established policies and procedures, relevant legislation, and best practices. The People Services Business Partner participates in HELP management meetings and leads in the implementation and coordination of various People Services programs and processes within the HELP group(s).

In this role you will:

Develop an in-depth understanding of the client group operations and workforce and their needs and priorities for people services and understand how to leverage the collective People Services team to meet those needs and priorities

Participate as an active member of the client group’s leadership team

Assess critical workforce metrics and data (e.g., surveys, exit interviews, focus groups) to generate insights that inform decisions and strategy and reports to the client’s leadership team

In consultation with the broader PS team, ensure the design, delivery and continuous evaluation of people services strategies, programs and investments in response to business needs

Provide leadership and guidance to workers and managers on the interpretation of Human Resources related policies and employment legislation, collective agreements, monitors compliance and acts on gaps and risks

Consult on issues related to performance, policy breaches, HR–related complaints, grievances,

Keep the broader People Services team informed of the operational activities and requirements of their client group

Build a talented, flexible and highly performing team by understanding the needs of the client and the resources of the broader PS team, apply sound management practices, provide opportunities for team members to develop, facilitate communication and information sharing and lead by example in a matrix structure

Act in a timely manner to support the client groups day to day people needs

Collects and maintains data for various HR and VR management tools for quarterly and ad hoc statistical reports

Generate, formats and interprets People Services data and reports for clients and provides recommendations on actions

Support as required health and safety programs providing direction and support to managers and workers as required; Maintains own knowledge and expertise as it relates to the position requirements (e.g., HR and Volunteer best practices, employment policy and legislation); Participate in training and team development activities to enhance knowledge and skills

Escalates complex issues to the Senior Business Partner as appropriate

Provides back-up to colleagues as required

May be called upon to participates in the rotating “On Call” process for Emergency Response Performs

other duties and works on assigned projects, as required



We’re looking for:

Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Human Resources Management, business or related discipline

Minimum of 5 years of experience as an HR generalist or equivalent senior management experience

Human Resources designation or working towards is preferred

Experience working in a complex matrix environment, with a diverse group of stakeholders (employees, volunteers and delegates)

Strong customer service orientation and planning, priority setting and negotiation skills to manage multiple clients with competing priorities

Experience developing and implementing a range of workforce strategies and programs in response to business needs (e.g., workforce planning, compensation, development, performance management)

Experience coaching and providing advice on complex people relations issues (e.g., performance management, discipline, termination, restructuring, change management)

Professionalism, credibility and exceptional interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a team and establish and manage productive internal and external relationships at all levels of the organization

Strong process and change management skills combined with outstanding communications skills, confidence and humility

Computer and numerical literacy, comfort working with data bases, metrics and applicant tracking system

Understanding and up to date on employment related legislation, HR best practices, volunteer best practices and HR trends

Fluency (speaking, reading and writing) in English is essential; a second language may be beneficial and fluency in French is desirable

Experience working in an emergency response and non profit organization is an asset

Ability to work some non-traditional and longer hours often on short notice especially during times of emergency response, travel within Canada will be required

Must be able to successfully complete an Enhanced Police Information check and Driver's Abstract

Specific duties and responsibilities in this job description will require adaptation as lessons are learned and priorities change.  All members of the People Services team are expected to demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and change leadership to support the success of the People Services team and the Canadian



Working conditions:

Significant Travel (50-60%) to HELP sites across the Province with a combination of on site and office work;

Office work is performed in typical office environment and can be a combination of work within the Canadian Red Cross office and the occasional agreed upon time to work from home

Ability to work non-traditional and longer hours often on short notice especially during times of emergency response

Must be able to be Medical Cleared for travel in accordance with established CRC Medical criteria in positions where travel will be required

Must be able to successfully complete a Canadian criminal record reference check and vulnerable sector check
