Scope:   The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC) requires a full-time, regular Communications Coordinator at the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation office in Edmonton to fill a parental leave.

Reports to:  Executive Director

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure relevant, timely, and accurate information is communicated to key stakeholders in an effective manner, through implementing the organization’s communication strategy
  • Design engaging and effective print and digital communication materials for all organizational programs, including event promotions, social media campaigns, e-newsletters, flyers, posters, annual reports, donor reports, presentation templates, and other key pieces as needed.
  • Ensure effectiveness and increase reach of organization’s various social media channels and websites, by maintaining, updating, and utilizing search engine optimization.
  • Draft and edit formal communication pieces for various audiences, including press releases, strategic communications, invitations and reports.

Annually, the Communications Coordinator is responsible to oversee all aspects of the Annual Top 30 Under 30 campaign, including:

  • Overseeing the design of the publication through the visual design concept, curation and production of content, and editing of written submissions and other materials.
  • Overseeing the development and creation of the Top 30 Under 30 website.
  • Contributing to the development of a media campaign and communications strategy, including
    the creation of media kits, media releases, and resource materials for the Top 30 Under 30
  • Responsible for implementing tools to evaluate the effectiveness of IDW programming. including reach and impact.
  • Utilizing evaluation results to prepare a final report to be submitted to the ACGC Executive Director based on Results Based Management tools and framework.


Regular tasks for the Communications Coordinator Role include:

  • Design and distribute bi-weekly e-bulletin to member organizations, as well as other targeted bulletins to key stakeholders.
  • Maintain and increase reach of ACGC’s main website, and additional microsites, adding new content on a regular basis.
  • Maintain and increase reach of organizational social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) to promote ACGC and member organization events and industry updates.
  • Design materials and communication strategies for key public engagement programs and events, including ACGC’s annual conference (Fall), International Development Week (February), school and youth engagement, capacity building events, and others as necessary.
  • Carry out additional tasks directly related to the successful implementation of ACGC programming as determined by the ACGC staff and board.
  • Be responsible for working within the budget as assigned to the various areas of programming
    under this job description.
  • Maintain organized and comprehensive files.
  • Contribute to regular data collection and donor reports.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Have expert communication skills (written, verbal and visual), and the ability to adapt communication style in a manner that is suitable and appropriate for various stakeholders.
  • Have a strong understanding of international development and cooperation combined with strong understanding of global citizenship and public engagement principles.
  • Have a proven ability to problem-solve and work independently.
  • Have excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to organize multiple tasks and appropriately prioritize activities.
  • Graphic Design: Skills using Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, and Photoshop to create documents for print is necessary.
  • Email marketing: Experience with Mailchimp email marketing.
  • Webdesign: Experience creating and maintaining websites with WordPress.
  • Have demonstrated success in a similar role.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to respect the values and differences that all members of a small team bring to an office environment.
  • Education and/or training in communications and/or design is strongly preferred.

This position will report to the Executive Director. It is envisioned that the position will be based at the ACGC office in Edmonton although alternative arrangements can be suggested if required. Hours of work can be flexible to accommodate the successful applicant, whom must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel.
