About Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society (PSMIS):

Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society is a pioneering family support organization. Our mission is to alleviate the suffering caused by serious mental illness - schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders (including obsessive-compulsive disorder), PTSD, and borderline personality disorder. We achieve this mission through: advocacy, support, and education. Our services are free of charge and include one-on-one support, crisis counselling, support groups, a family education program, schools programs, and a public lecture series.

Role Summary:

PSMIS is looking for a well-rounded Marketing, Communication and Event Intern with a diverse skillset to assist with communications, marketing and event planning. The preferred candidate will be someone who is tech-savvy and possesses great written and verbal communication skills. Someone who is able to take on new challenges in the fundraising sector and excel in both digital and physical spaces is essential.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Social Media
    • Curating or creating daily/weekly content
    • Assist with social media campaign planning centered around events
    • Assist with social media auditing and performance review
  • Digital Communications
    • E-mail
      • Assist with the designing quarterly newsletters via MailChimp
      • Co-develops and implements e-mail marketing strategy to increase program attendance, improve fundraising efforts and increase event attendance
    • Marketing Assistance
      • Assist with developing and implementing marketing plans for events
      • Collaborate on marketing strategies to maximize fundraising
    • Event Coordination Assistance
      • Assist with obtaining deliverables required for events
      • Attend meetings with event organizers and related stakeholders
      • Be present for events outside of regular work hours
    • Graphic Design
      • Experience with Photoshop Elements or Creative Suite is highly preferred
      • Experience creating programs, brochures, adverts highly preferred
      • Strong understanding of how to create visually appealing products
    • Updating website media
      • Basic to intermediate familiarity with WordPress (no coding or site building required)
      • Able to update pages and posts with both written and visual content
    • Fundraising reviews and performance auditing
      • Assist with reviewing fundraising events and assessing their strengths and weaknesses
      • Utilize that information to make suggestions for improvement during the annual cycle of events
    • Establishing contact lists and making database updates required for fundraising efforts
      • Assist in seeking audiences for our events
      • Establish relationships with our donors and attendees for events


  • Proven, results-oriented individual who is self-motivated
  • Possesses fundraising, marketing and volunteer management experience
  • Dedicated, well-spoken, well-written professional
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to produce reports maintain records and provide data for evaluation and monitoring purposes
  • Able to build networks and partnerships with individuals and groups
  • Effective computer skills

  • Adobe CS
  • WordPress
  • Knowledge and understanding of disability issues affecting people mental illness
  • Highly organized and excellent multi-tasker
  • Flexible and willing to take on challenges in a dynamic fundraising environment
  • Knowledge of financial management, evaluation processes and overall organization methods
  • Willing and able to work outside of normal hours work, the time and days to be decided by management, depending on the need
  • Ability to be flexible and respond to new or unexpected events.

Start and End date of contract:

October 2019 to March 2020

35 hours/week working from the office ONLY.


Basic Requirements:

 - Be between the ages of 15 to 30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship;
 - Legally entitled to work in Canada; Canadian citizen, permanent Resident or person who has been

 granted refugee status.
