The Senior Manager of Student Services is a core management position that provides leadership and direction for the Student Services department. The department includes engagement components (sustainability and diversity programming, volunteer student safety program, and student group services), leadership programs, student awards, and campus-wide information, referral, and registry services. The services unit employs a mix of students and full-time professionals, and relies upon a broad base of volunteers.


The Senior Manager of Student Services is responsible for all aspects of the Students’ Union Services portfolio and other student engagement projects.  This position has a strong focus on strategic planning, building relationships, enhancing student engagement on campus, and staff development. 


Providing leadership to the SU’s portfolio of student services, the Senior Manager is responsible for maintaining a high standard of service and the efficient delivery of services commensurate with managing the long-term financial viability of the department.  The Senior Manager is also responsible for ensuring that services are relevant and responsive to the needs of a diverse student body.



Staff Management & Development

  1. Oversee personnel issues in the student life department (including contracts, job descriptions, performance management, hiring, transition and training) in collaboration with the Human Resources. 

  2. Provide coaching and develop professional development plans for the department’s professional staff in conjunction with the Student Services’ Team Leads. 

  3. Create programming and systems that ensure the professional development, learning and job success for student staff. 

  4. Create and execute recruitment and hiring processes for staff members in the department, both student and professional. 

Strategic Planning 

  1. Ensure sustainability of services through long-range planning, ongoing assessment, analysis, and institutional memory. 

  2. Develop and set strategic and medium term plans for the student services portfolio, and to oversee new policy, service and program development.

  3. Keep abreast of changes, trends and best practices in the Student Affairs field, and ensure that the Students’ Union services remain both current and innovative. 

  4. As part of the Core Management group, provide advice and assistance on policy matters, cross-functional initiatives and projects, and general Students’ Union strategy and tactics.


  1. Oversee the activities of all SU student services, as well as the SU component of all joint SU/University services, such that these services are of high utility and quality.

  2. Oversee all student services portfolio budgets within parameters set out for budget process by the Vice-President (Operations & Finance) and the Controller. 

  3. Seek granting, sponsorship and other creative partnership opportunities where possible.

  4. Develop cutting edge services and programs, and continually assess their efficiency and effectiveness. 

  5. Assist with the facilitation of programs run by the Students’ Union Services department.

  6. Ensure accurate and specific statistics are collected, analyzed, and reported to internal and external stakeholders. 

Relationship Building 

  1. Facilitate collaboration between Students’ Union Services, University Student Services, and other University offices. Work with University Administration, Faculty, and Department Offices to ensure that all information disseminated is accurate and that the services provided meet the needs of all stakeholders.

  2. Liaise and establish good working relationships with appropriate University departments and with other stakeholders, with the guidance of the Executive Committee and the General Manager.

  3. Participate in University of Alberta committees and working groups relevant to the work of the Services including topics of safety, mental health, mentorship and sustainability.

  4. Oversee the marketing efforts of units within the student services, in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Marketing and Communications. 

  5. Maintain ongoing and effective communication with the Executive Committee and the Core Managers.

Perform other job-related duties as required.



  1. Post-secondary degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  2. Must demonstrate an intimate knowledge and understanding of post-secondary student issues. 

  3. Excellent communication skills, organizational abilities, and leadership and coaching skills required. 

  4. Supervisory/management experience is required.

  5. Program development, evaluation, assessment, facilitation skills are required.

  6. Knowledge of student development theories, student leadership models, and current trends in student affairs is required. 

  7. The ability to balance independent direction with assigned responsibility. 

  8. Ability to work effectively with SU and University staff, students and the general public is required. 

  9. Project management experience is an asset. 

  10. Event planning experience is an asset. 

  11. Understanding of the University of Alberta context is an asset.



  • 37.5 hours/week

  • Some evening and weekend work is required
